Picking and Planting Cold Hardy Frontenac Gris Grapes in Alberta Urban Garden
Tips, Tricks
I was excited to find out from my Grand Fathers last year that grapes could be grown in Zone 3!! They both were so nice as to send heirloom concord grapes last year to me! This year after I built a full garden trellis I realized my plans for Arctic Kiwis were not to be... I apparently am allergic and cant have them... so I decided to get some more GRAPES!!! Grapes are one of the older domesticated plants! There is even evidence to support the fact that they were domesticated in the middle east between 10,000 and 8,000 years ago for food and wine! When selecting your grape types doing some research is essential! They are grown in a variety of locations and climates around the world. Selecting one that will do great in your region is important! I chose Frontenac and Frontenac Gris grapes for my garden! They were developed by the university of Minnesota and are great for eating, making preserves and Wine! Check out their website at the following URL: http://www.grapes.umn.edu When ever you pick perennials that will be there for years and years is to select a location they can be permanently. With Grapes you will need a trellis as well as they vine. Check out how I built mine in this how-to video. http://youtu.be/2I6_9ndTM-Y This week I show you how to plant them in raised beds for the best possible results! Check out this playlist for more great grape tips in colder zones! http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5mfR-r4BXH29R3vw5Az5-IhcCkw5XV_8 Some of my favorite childhood memories are of gardening with my parents and brothers. Appreciate video content! Excuse me for chiming in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you tried - Lammywalness Green Grapes Guide (google it)? It is a good one of a kind guide for learning how to become a successful grape grower minus the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my buddy got excellent results with it.

neat idea for the trellis. Thanks for sharing

What zone are you in. I have moved from southern Ontario to northern Ontario 2B :(. I love gardening and need to learn

Well that sort of answered the question I asked on the trellis clip ;-)
Haven't had grape jam in ages..
Cheers mate.. -
I have leaves again! Thanks for encouraging me to wait I might have dug it up and missed it! I did prune off the dead wood but it's growing. I'm so excited!

you might want to try some honneyberrys i could send you some plants if you want to try

Great video on your future perennials grapes. I was wonder if you could take some paint and some stencils and paint the boards behind the plant to mark it for the future. The little cards that come with them get lost pretty quickly. Figured you could save the card for the inside and keep all the important information for it safe. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing your new beds and trellis

Hello. Where abouts in Alberta are you? That nursery where you got your plants looks awesome! I'm excited for your grapes!

Another great perennial in the Alberta Urban Garden! I'm glad to hear that there are grapes hardy to zone 3. You'll be enjoying them in no time!

I planted a red grape last year. it's good for our zone 5. it started to get leaves again this spring. But we had a frost mid May and those leaves died. Now the stem just looks dead. should I prune it down or leave it? Do you think it will come back?

Cool vid about your grape plants, Stephen! You`ll be running around half drunk on your coming uploads from all that vine you`ll receive! :)
I planted a grape vine in the greenhouse last year, and didn`t expect it to carry so much fruits. I`m overwhelmed by the amount of fruits developing on it.
I`ll may take some cuttings later and try to grow them outside to see if they tackle our winter.
I`m so happy there are so many northern gardeners testing out different plants to grow in this climate. Much learning, that would have taken a lifetime to learn on our own.
Good job, mate!

I have been researching fruits for our zone. I can't believe how much we CAN grow here. Of course we have to get the right variety and pollinators but we can grow apricots, apples (not crabapples, real apples) , pears, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, haskhop berries, plums, grapes, kiwi, saskatoon, cranberries and gooseberries and even a few types of cherries. I knew about a few of those but that we can grow that much sounds so good to me. I have found some peach trees good until zone 2, but I have not yet found anyone online who is successfully growing them. Have you found anybody growing peaches in Alberta?

Nice you'll be sure to have plenty now for the wine making, :)

With all this wine you'll be making, are you thinking of exporting some, you would have a very interested customer right here my friend :D Good job, as always!

Thanks for providing the variety of those green grapes you planted +Stephen Legaree I'm going to be on the lookout for them now, I much prefer green grapes over concordes!

Hey Stephen! I'm back from Manitoba for a week. You really seem to be looking forward to that wine! I got all my watermelons and my cantaloupe planted. I moved half my peppers outside from the green house. I have 9 varieties fruited already. I have hundreds of peppers on the vine. I ate a nice fat red Gypsy hybrid from the garden with my eggs this morning. It was great! The six Saskatoon berry trees that I planted have all got leaves on them. So things are going great. I hope to get the rest of my garden planted over the next few days. I am going to have to head back to Manitoba so I can get some rest. Have a great day!

cool video Stephen i too am on the grape adventure this year lol

Have you thought about picking up a variety that would be good for "Ice Wine"? Since the grapes for ice wine don't get their full flavor till they literally freeze on the vine, it sounds like they may be suitable to your area.

I see rhubarb AND grape wine in your future. :)))
