My opinion on using soft drink bottles as wicking pots. I had mixed results with the soft drink bottles as wicking pots. Some where successful while others were not as successful. I found that the method using the sand was a better than the funnel method. I think it is because there is more surface area for the water to wick up into the dirt than in the funnel and reservoir method. Also the sponge rotted away very quickly in the funnel method. So I would prefer the wicking method with the sand. Another thing I observed was that if you had 2/3rd sand to 1/3rd growing medium the method worked better. But don't think I would use this method with the soft drink bottles, much prefer my peat pots and wicking them, and my wicking propagation tray.
