Sick orchids are not a topic we like to talk about, but it is very important to know how to spot, treat and prevent illness with orchids. Today we talk about bacterial brown rot. The cause for this is, in most cases, water left standing inside crowns, new growths and in the places where the leaf meets the stem or axis of the orchid. They start as a wet looking spot that progresses pretty fast as days go by. As the wet patch extends, a brown coloration starts to appear and the leaf may start to yellow, spreading more and more and trying to take over the leaf. To treat this we need to cut the entire affected portion, cutting into healthy tissue so that the disease doesn't reoccur. It is also advised to use a bactericide or fungicide, but if you are not ok with these substances you can use hydrogen peroxide 3% from your local human pharmacy. This is not as string and efficient as a fungicide, but it is not toxic and it does help. To prevent this diseases we need to avoid water left on leaves, crown and new growths, so when watering your orchid you need to make sure not to splash it on the orchid itself. Use fans or keep your growing area ventilated, most of the times this will prevent a lot of bacterial and fungal infections.
