Newspaper Weed Barrier

I used 3-4 layers of newspaper as an alternative, ecofriendly, and cheap alternative to a weed barrier while planting a tree in my friend’s backyard. The weed barrier will eventually breakdown and decompose into the earth. The newspaper is topped with a 3-4 inch layer of wood mulch and this combination should suppress the weeds. I have seen some people use cardboard, but this is the material I had at the time. What have you used as an eco-friendly alternative?

I don't have a garden so I'm not an expert at this but I wouldn't feel comfortable using newspaper as a weed barrier because of the printing ink that could eventually get into the earth and plant.
I would rather use regular white paper (not recycled paper because it is usually made from newspapers as well)
