Only accessible by helicopter, the range is home to many bizarre and unique creatures such as rare frogs, lizards known as skinks, and the leaf-tailed gecko. These creatures have survived millions of years without ever being discovered. Scientists believe the rainforest ecosystem is largely responsible for keeping these new species alive for millions of years. 6- Lake Vostok, Antarctica – A lake under ice, Lake Vostok is the size of Lake Ontario, but sits below 2 miles of ice, making it the largest of Antarctica’s 400 known subglacial lakes. The lake has been assessed to have been covered by ice for at least 15 million years. Scientists have discovered 3,500 life forms below the ice sheets, as well as a complex ecosystem. If what scientists are implying is true, then Lake Vostok has fixed, used and recycled its own limited supply of carbon for several million years – making life on the moon a serious possibility! 5- Palawan Highlands, Philippines – Imagine being a botanist and exploring an isolated corner of an island and unearthing new exotic flowers, never seen by the human eye before. That’s what happened in 2007 when a team of botanists travelled to the Palawan Island in the Philippines and stumbled upon pink ferns, blue mushrooms and even a carnivorous pitcher plant – so big it feeds on rodents and small monkeys! Think Venus flytrap meets Little Shop of Horrors. There are other mysterious forms of life living on this unusual highland located at the top of Mount Victoria and Mount Sagpaw – but they have not been identified yet. 4- Mount Roraima, Venezuela, Brazil, Guyana – A mountain rock formation reaching over 9,000 feet tall marks the border between Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana. It is said that the formation could be as old as 70 million years. No one ever ventured up because of the stories of the bizarre creatures living overhead. The plateau of this amazing place sits high above the clouds, making it seem dreamlike. Said to be the inspiration behind Arthur Conan-Doyle’s The Lost World, this highland serves as home to many never before seen plants, flowers and a unique type of toad called the Roraima Bush Toad. 3- Sima Humboldt & Sima Martel, Venezuela – At first glance Sima Humboldt & Sima Martel just look like a couple of big holes. But upon closer inspection they are actually two giant sink holes that were spotted by a pilot in 1961 on a summit in Venezuela. The vertical walls of both sinkholes have been challenging for plants and animals living on the bottom of both wells to climb. Therefore, over a long time there has developed a unique, small ecosystem with species of plants and animals that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Many locals believe these holes are mystical and evil, even calling them the gateway to hell. 2- East Scotia Ridge, Southern Ocean – Right between Antarctica and the tip of South America is an underwater habitat that is 8,000 feet deep and has temperatures reaching 700 degrees F due to hypothermal vents. First explored using a robot in 2010, the ridge is home to a plethora of unknown species including the albino octopus, seven pronged starfish and new type of lobster. They also found a new yeti crab species with hair on its abdomen that they have lovingly dubbed “The Hoff.” 1-Bosavi Crater, New Guinea – 200,000 years ago, a volcano erupted in New Guinea leaving behind a perfect jungle habitat, bursting with wildlife never before seen to the human eye. Over 40 unknown species have been discovered in the vast jungle of this crater. The types of animals found include a fanged frog, grunting fish, kangaroos that live in trees, birds of paradise, and giant rats that are up to 32 inches long! Researchers have said that the giant rats are not afraid of humans and will even let you hold them. Umm, I think we’re good! If you could visit any one of these lost worlds, which one would it be?
