My Elephant Ears - Wisconsin Garden Video Blog 64.wmv
Tips, Tricks
After the first frost it's time to dig up all tropical bulbs. Several years ago I planted (1) tropical Elephant Ear bulb. See how many I unearthed today and how I prepare them for their winter hibernation.

I buy the bulbs and cook most of them, as long as they are the Colocasia esculenta type. The bulbs are edible if cooked. Poisonous if raw. That's what is known as Taro or Yautia. They are eaten all over the tropical areas.

This has been very helpful. I just bought two bulbs today because I really love the elephant ears. Had some years ago but did not realize I needed to lift up in winter...Thanks to you, I know no how. I expect I will have many babies for years to come!

Oh my goodness...don't cut that far down! In fact, allow the foliage to dry up before cutting. The energy from the stems/leaves will be stored and produce that much better plants the following year.

At what temp do you store them in your basement? Is it room temp or cold? Would I been able to store them in my unheated ny garage? Great job on presentation

Thank you. I had no idea what to do with these when I dug them up. You did a great job showing me what to do.
