I show you how to use chicken wire to stop rabbits. I also start an experiment on growing container plants in mostly wood chips (an experiment) and show you how my plot looks since I closed it down in December. It is here! The 2016 season. Hi Gary :) How is it going with the plants in the wood chips? Its been more than 2 months since you planted the brussel sprouts and I'm very interested!!
Thanks. -
Is that your wife @ 14:24??!!

Are you ever worried about humans stealing? Husband brought that up to me today as we will be planting in our plot in about 2 weeks. I figure that they must really need the food and hopefully God blesses them.

Gary, you, live in Maryland right? When do you plant all your warm crops? Also, I keep having problems with white flies on my kale. Any suggestions?

So can I add lime to my beds for tomatoes right before I plant them or should I do it before hand? We did good overall with tomatoes last year but we lost a lot to blossom end rot.

I'll be interested to see the result. To my knowledge the fresh wood chips require so much nitrogen while breaking down they yellow, stunt or even kill plants around them. If the mix works, that will be cool. Good luck.
-
are you using older wood chips for the containers or does it matter with the added nitrogen source

I have access to free wood chips from my local transfer station. They are mostly from pine and I am concerned that they may adversely effect the acidity of my soil. Are these ok to use? I've been putting them in the compost and on my garden paths but would like to till them into my dense soil too.

Don't forget about cutworms. I place 3 or 4 wooden toothpicks around each transplant, right up against the stem, halfway into the soil. Its like a tiny fence keeping the cutworms out. They can't wrap around the toothpick like they can the stem so your plant is safe. I've had excellent results doing this at transplant time.

Thanks for the video, great! I am just starting to do similar projects on my channel –maybe you could pop over and give me some advice? Keep up the good work :)

Very good explanation for getting the garden going again. I wanted to comment on the traffic noise. Have you tried a microphone? I was wondering if more noise could be eliminated.

FYI to any that read this information. "Coffee Grounds" can inhibit the growth of seedlings if you add them to your seed starting mix. I would advise not to use them from experience. I spread some across the top of my seeds to keep away the fungus gnats and the growth stopped although they sprouted and started to grow but once I started to water them, I guess the caffeine inhibit the growth and it has been over a month and they have not grown. PEACE

Gary, have you watched the YouTube channel called Allotment Diary? Bloke from across the pond that has an amazing method for potatoes. Thanks again for all of the advice

hi Gary, you have a nice garden here. I just got my plastic up on my homemade greenhouse. It went up to 94 degrees and rising not sure how high it is now but I am afraid to put plants into there from 65 in the house. Should I add 2 screens to the ends for vents and check the temp then? or is that hot of a temp. ok. It is 53 outside sunny, and very windy . Thanks!

coco coir is ph neutral and sustainable. I use it instead of peat, you can buy compressed bricks of it on ebay.

Another great video, cant wait to see the next update :)

Leaf-gro is a sustainable LOCAL product that is superior to other bagged stuff at home centers.

I have a question! I planted some cucumber seeds. They sprouted fine, but a week later, half of them are getting that pinched stem thing going on and eventually die. I've had that happen in the past when I tried to transplant them too soon, but I haven't touched these other than to water them. What causes that to happen?
