The greatest sign of a beneficial hugelkultur is the appearance of mushrooms. Wood proteins have broken down into black gold soil, and mushrooms are able to drill into the deep depths of the soil with their mycorhyzhae, retrieving the (nano) colloidal minerals and bring them to the surface.
