MFG 2016: Seed Starting Tips for Rosemary & Lavender & Onions: Chill Them and Know Your Onion Zone
Tips, Tricks
If you refrigerate Lavender and Rosemary it helps them to better germinate. I show you how to plant them and talk about when you should start them indoors. Onions can be seed started early too but you do have to know what onion zone you are in and I explain that. Welcome to My 1st Vegetable Garden. This channel is 100% dedicated to new vegetable gardeners that want to learn and have lots of questions. Check out my associated Blog: The Rusted Garden! http://therustedgarden.blogspot.com/ Please help spread the world of my channel to all the new gardeners you know that are looking for a friendly place to learn.

hi I like your videos, I live in Springfield, MA what is this zone number?
-
Gary just a tip for Rosemary that I learned in horticulture class last semester is that Rosemary requires light to germinate. I also know tobacco is the same in requiring light for germination. I believe lavender is the same if I recall correctly. We simply put a very light dusting of vermiculite on them and got great results.

When do you recommend planting cumbers, lettuce, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and watermelon seeds indoors for transplants for zone 7a?

Thanks for sharing Gary. Best wishes Bob.

Great quote "Onions are pretty indestructible". Thanks!

Technically we are an intermediate onion zone...I guess what my point was is Maryland is much closer to the long day zone then the short day zone. The short day zone starts around the VA and NC border and the long day zone starts at the mason Dixon line. I've grown long days with success in MD but I've never attempted short days as most of those are planted in the fall and over wintered in the south.

Zone 7 is on the long day/intermediate line. Not even close to being a short day onion area. I grow long days and intermediates with success in Maryland every year. Keep up the good work!
