MFG 2016: Planting Chives a Perennial Herb Using the Over-Seeding Method: Start Early!
Tips, Tricks
Many herbs can be planted using an over-seeding method. That is, putting a lot of seeds in a single cell. I start my herbs, here in Maryland Zone 7, 10-12 weeks before they are ready to go outside. The over-seeding method lets me save space and I get 4 plants from a single cell. This can be done with your perennial herbs like Oregano, Thyme and Chives. If you watched 1 of the 3 videos on these herbs, you don't have to watch them all (LOL). The principle is the same. Welcome to My 1st Vegetable Garden. Hi Gary, thanks for the videos - I've been watching them for a few years now and they are very helpful. Chives-question: I've been growing chives in my sun room in Berlin, Germany, lot's of sun, pretty warm temperatures, careful watering and reasonable soil. Sowed them in April 10th (so they're now about 3.5 months old, they seem healthy but there's no sign of flowers yet. Any clue why?
Thanks!

What kind of grow lights are you using for the seeds? Also how long do you keep the lights on and off? How often are you watering them?
-
I put them under a grow light. But I do think there might be fungus.

Hi Gary, love your videos. I started garlic and onion chives indoors in 8oz cups using cocunut coir and place them near a heating vent. The seedlings germinated but not straight up. some attempted to come up but stopped and died off. They do not appear to grow straight up through the cocunut coir. I over seeded. What do you think I might doing wrong

Should I use the over-seeding method on growing basil??
-
Approximately when will you put them into your garden?
-
Is there any benefit (ie flavor wise) for starting new perennial herbs every year?
