Making of a Green Japanese Maple Bonsai Part II Root Pruning Potting.mp4
Tips, Tricks
This is Part II, shows the root pruning and potting. The root of this plant does not look very healthy, I thought it would be very dense and rootbound, but it is not. Video also shows an update of the plant 50 days after the potting. Thanks for watching

Wooo that was brutal. It is no wonder your maple didn't bud as much as you expected. It is not wise to root prune and upper foliage or branch prune together. Even if the tree is dicidious. You should only do one thing - then rest the plant for 3 or 4 months before attempting the other. re Bonsai & Balcony ..saplings to trees on iBooks for guidance and photos. Cheers

It depends on each individual plant and your own watering habits. Most people like a faster draining mix along with some material that will hold a bit of water. This means that your plant is unlikely to get over watered but you have to be vigilant on when it needs water. Potting soil holds a lot of water for a very long time so it may be good if the plant is in bad health or you don't like watering. However potting soil can lead to disease and over watering. Potting soil isn't cohesive to bonsai

that tree was nearly dead , those roots are black through over watering .
-
regular potting soil is good ? or bad? some say yes - others say no. No real answer I see.

You repotted a little too early. For a Japanese maple, you should wait until the buds are just about to open and showing just the faintest hint of green. This allows the energy stored in the roots to migrate into the trunk and branches so the tree can recover more quickly. That is why the tree struggled after repotting.
-
sorry but your substrat is very bad.

Best time would be when the buds are starting to swell in early spring, just as they're about to open. Here's what I've been told about that: in winter, the tree has nutrients/energy stored in the roots. Early spring this is being pushed back up to make leaves. As soon as the leaves come out of the buds, the tree can then use the remaining energy/nutrients to grow new hair roots, while using the leaves to sustain itself.

You water as needed. Check the soil, see if it's not dried out. Be aware that even when the top layer is dry, further down can still retain water, depending on how deep/shallow the pot is. If you're not sure, use the dipstick method: take a simple wooden skewer, stick it in the pot, let it sit for a few minutes, then pull it back out.

So how often do you water? I will keep mine on a patio with little to no rainwater. Thanks for the great videos.

Hi, when do you root prune your maple?
-
Excuse me but if u do this dont u have to repot it or just leave it

Thank you for your reply. Yeah I can see how people end up with their "own" mix . I suppose it is just about finding the right balance at first. Once you have a basic mix you can always just add a bit of that depending on the actual plant/tree you are going to use. Keep the videos coming !!! I am dying to see how your willow cutting is getting along :) I have watched two of the willow videos.

Hello from South Africa :) Thank you very much for your videos, I can't stop watching them. Very inspirational and educational , keep up the good work !!! A few questions or requests if you don't mind.Any tips/ videos growing from seed ?. I know this is a very long process but have you tried it? My 2nd request would be could you please do a video on soil types. Basically I would like to know if you use a "general" soil mix for all your trees or do you have specific mixes for Maples, conifers etc.

I like the bird story, it made me laugh. And it was a lesson in physics as well.
