Making My Own Mulch And Rock Garden Flower Bed
Tips, Tricks
Tuesday I finished my rock garden flower bed before the rain hit. I wanted to get the flowers in before it rained so they would be watered nicely by nature. I got my mulching machine out of the garden storage tent and pulled it up next to my rock flower bed. I fired it up and started to feed old leaves into the machine. I think I put about 10 wheel barrow loads into the machine to get a heavy, thick mulch for my flower garden. It is up to 4 inches thick in places. That is perfect for retaining moisture and to provide fertilizer for my plants as the leaves decompose. I then finally got my flowers planted. It started to rain right after I finished so I accomplished my goal. Earlier in the morning a hawk attacked my baby chicks and the big roosters chased it away and started to make a lot of noise to attract my attention. When I ran outside the hawk flew away. My roosters get to keep their heads now. They have proven their value as fighters and protectors of the little ones. The chicks follow me around whenever I am near begging for food. I cannot believe how much they eat. They need food three times per day now. The adult chickens can free range but the little ones need more food due to their fast growing. The larger birds also scratch for food as needed but the little ones are still learning. The homestead is looking very nice now. My mulching machine is starting to pay for itself in savings too. When my garden is tilled I will run the mulcher to get a nice thick covering of decaying leaves on top to protect my garden plants. I am also cleaning up all the dead leaves by doing this and making the whole place look better. Creeping Flox is so beautiful in the spring and each year it spreads a lot. 🌸

I made use of the big pile of mulch at mom and dad's from when some big tree limbs came down in a storm last year. It was probably rather amusing looking because I was walking back and forth with the wheel barrow, but I got two sections of my wrap-around garden bed cleaned up and filled with mulch now. I'm pretty excited about how it turned out. I planted bulbs in the one area that I'm hoping come up in the spring. My goal is to put in more bulbs each year and spend less on annuals. With the mulch, it requires fewer flowers to look nice, too.

catnip lavender and sage repel mosquitos. The flower garden is looking great!!! (I can't wait to get caught up on vids) I think the indention in the rock would make for a nice birdbath as long as you keep it fresh so mosquitos don't nest in it. Maybe you could put your birdfeeders on those trees next to it.

Not mulch lol

nice video

I would leave it as a natural bird watering station

The rock garden just looks outstanding... good use of natural materials. It sets the tone and should draw the eye in. Who knows, maybe the inspectors will be in a much better mood after they see it. :D

flower garden looks good u do know the pepermint is like a weed it will take over the garden. i think i would fit a tube on the mulcher keep it from flying every where.

I agree with Tony. Keep the low spot as a bird bath. Any plant you put there will likely have a hard time since there won't be enough earth mass to hold enough moisture. Have you considered building a compost box that you can chip/shred all that stuff into in one spot and let it start composting?

I just had a brilliant idea! why no put a GNOME in the wet spot and that will be protection from the evil TROLLS!

Why wouldn't you put the gutter under the lip so it drips in rather than tracking the surface of the fiberglass? Why are you unwilling to put screws in it? No museum is ever going to want it. RV's of this vintage are worthless. It's best value is working for you. Less temporary, more "well done". I'd love to see if you can go 1 week without using the word "temporary". ;-) How to drill fiberglass. Measure drill a hole the size of the shaft of the screw (as if the threads were removed). Use a counter sink bit to bevel away the gel coat on the surface. The gel coat is the thin outside layer that provides the color. This will crack and split off if you try to cut threads into it. Put some silicone or bathtub caulk on the screw and in the hole. Run the screw in, finish by hand, not with an electric drill.

Looking good Troy keep up the good work. You should leave the the void in the rock as a bird bath. Also now that you have a toilet, can you now sleep on the property ?

Keep the rock, check cracks for gold, not kidding.....

I like the idea of putting strawberries in the hole in the rock. The place is really looking great. Good luck on your inspection.

I forgot, the chicks might need the grower food now..one changes it from 6 tom 8 weeks old! I would double their food, and give them your kitchen scrap..not potato peelings though! Do you give them grit, they need that to help digest their food! Other than that they look great!
