Regarding the lily leaf beetles, yes, hand-picking works great. We had them so badly when I inherited this garden from the former property owners that I couldn't even tell what the plants were. But the adult beetles are bright red and sit on the tops of the lilies waiting for mates, so it's easy to make a round once a morning, starting after your last frost date, and pick them off. (Mark your calendar for next year.) If you can get the first generation before they lay eggs, you're golden for the rest of the summer. Last year I only found 4 beetles. This year I'll just have to worry about the ones that migrate in from the neighbors. They instinctively drop to the ground if disturbed, so just shake the top of the plant over a pie pan or planter saucer and squish anyone who falls. Merry invasive management to you all. (They don't eat day lilies, just members of the "true" lily family.)

Great information. I love the lilies. Just bought 4 tree lilies to add to my other lilies. The stargazers are my favorites, but all of them are wonderful.

Are there any daylilies that are scented? Can you grow them in pots?

You can also use them solitair. Get your self some steel mesh (1,2 or 3) for pooring reinforced concrete. Bend it a bit round so it's more stable, and visiual actractive (or other shape, so you don't need ugly poles). Then plant dark purple 'Clematis vit. Polish Spirit' against the mesh. It will grow to 80 inch. Than you will have a dark purple backdrop with a lot of flowers. Put the Orange lillium in front of it, and you will notice it ! (Truss me, it will be the brightest orange you ever will see !)
So, it's all about the background....... And for a nice design, repeat this 3 or more times. Prefered slightly round, just like the bending of the mesh. Or put the Mesh in the foreground and make a hole in it. And put the lillium in a pot behind it. After blooming you can replace it with a statue or other art work. In spring you can use Alliums that look nice with the new green leaves of the Clematis. Or other plant, aslong it's almost the same height.
Lillium beetle: I also kill them by hand. It's no problem. Just move very slowly. If they notice you, the will try to fall on the ground. They turn around and be red again after some seconds. So, if you lost it. Just wait a bit. It will turn around.
This is one of my day lillium: https://allthingsplants.com/plants/photo/245576/ (Very large spider, one year old now)
Also day lillies can have bug's: Cecidomyiidae. There more evil than the lillybeetle. They will lay egg's inside the flower. Remove flowers that don't open and look `fat` and put them in a plastic bag or burn them with a tourch. Do not compost and if you throw them away. Make shure there really dead and can't escape your waste bin, because they will come back to haunt you. I have a handy small propane tourch to burn them, before i throw them away.
