Tips, Tricks
Here is a quick video I threw togheter showing my lawn renovation in fall of 2011. I show the progress from start to finish of the lawn. Its still not 100% where I would like it but its coming along with the time I have to do it. Thanks for watching and check out our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/jcparacordworkz http://www.facebook.com/jcpaintworkz

The round-up was completely unnecessary.
-
Not the best lawn I have seen for the amount of work put in.
-
You don't need to use round-up it'll kill all the birds, bugs and soil along with giving your children non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The hell strips are tough. I'm considering putting down red rock in my yard by the street from the curb for the first 5 inches.

I did almost the same thing back in 2006 except I tilled the dead grass out and let the soil bake in the NC august heat. I read the recommended to cover the ground with a black plastic to kill the weed seeds but that was impractical and expensive and not needed as the round up was very persistent and I waited 6 weeks before seeding to ensure my seeds would not be killed. I raked to level (still have the best of a rake) and took out about five 5 gal buckets of gravel and you name it, it was there trash from the initial construction. I used peat as and it worked extremely well got a good deal on end of season clearance and some ripped bags.

I reseeded my lawn with kgb and today is day 15 with very little growth, Temps were not on my side when planted as it was 95 degrees the first week when I mistakenly looked at my vacation Zip code instead of my area zip code before I planted and thought it was gonna be low 80s for two weeks, i mixed in fescue seed with kgb and i am barely seeing any new sprouts, but I am seeing more everyday but I just don't know if i should reseed again or just keep waiting. My lawn looks terrible right now because weeds are growing everywhere because of the excess water. any advice?

in some of your original pictures, i see you had some weed plants, how did you get rid of them without destroying the sod.

why not just lay down sod and water it properly. Seems like your yard was pretty far gone, and while I don't disagree with your process, I just wonder if it is worth the time when you could have just sodded and had a beautiful yard in 6 hours?

Just a suggestion on those "hell strips". First, since they are surrounded by concrete, they will dry out fast and need deeper irrigation. Second, the salt may be a problem as mentioned. The best way to keep those areas up and green is to soak the areas 3 to 4 times a week after snow melts to leech the salts through the root zone. Dog urine areas are handled the same way. Urine is high in uric acid (nitrogen) and browns grass horribly. Soaking these areas every day for 5 minutes will continually wash the high nitrogen through. In heavy silt/clay soils, will require slower and more frequent..sandy soils not so much. Nice lawn BTW! I just got 50# Midnight 100% Kentucky Blue..

Great video thought my grass had fail but it seems to grow patchy at first.👍👍👍👍

Why didn't you remove the dead grass and till the soil bedore reseeding it?
-
You should of aerated the lawn before applying fertilizer and grass seed.
-
stop buying round up you dirt bags
-
Burlap bags help keep seeds damp during the germination period.

Please tell us what USDA Plant Hardiness Zone you are in. Glad you told us what season.
Knowing what natural conditions typically exist explains many issues one may encounter.
We assume cool-season KY blue was a good choice for the zone?
I got a tip to use sheet plastic for several days to kill any ground cover instead of using Round-up. -
I wish I did a double-roundup attack. I didn't even think about it! I have similar weeds growing up now... is that crabgrass? DAMN.
