Something unexpected is growing in my container. This is a kabocha plant, commonly called Japanese pumpkin. It germinated in my container and now have grown into a beautiful plant.

How many kabocha did you get in the end for this one plant btw? It is kabocha btw. I love this pumpkin. One of my cats is called kabocha :-)

Looks a lot like nasturtiums, almost identical flowers and similar leaf shape

Try adding 1 yr old wood chips. The fungus in the wood chips combined with compost will give amazing results as the plant roots will form a beneficial relationship with the fungus below ground.

I liked that you said you grew the soil for many months before growing the squash in it. If you would like to generate soil more quickly, you should look into bokashi composting. I have generated over a yard of very fertile soil in just a month using this composting method. My kabocha squash is thriving in the soil also.

I'd be interested to know if this plant survived. My kabocha must always have deeper soil to grow in and the vine moves yards and yards. I let it grow horizontally at first until the vine is established and then I let it grow up a trellis to an old jungle gym I left in the yard for that purpose. I get about 15 kabocha from one seed but I have never seen a short, stubby plant like this. Did it grow well for you? My kabocha were picked when they were about 6 lbs each and I highly doubt this pot is big enough to grow that many fruit. If you want a lot of pumpkins, put the plant in the ground. You won't regret it.
