can you do it without the rooting hormone ?
-
I live in Houston, I have been researching a lot about rooting some juniper cuttings. I have heard mixed opinions on technique and timing, etc...But this is what I have done so far, I took a cutting yesterday, cut with razor blade, soaked it it SuperThrive for 20 min, placed it in a mix of sand, lava rock, and potting soil. It is in the shade with a grocery bag with vents cut into it. I mist the green part of the branches often. What are the chances that this baby will grow some roots?

@MrChughes I take juniper cuttings in March (I know, I made the video in September).
-
@ELLtheBAG This cutting did not take (wrong time of year) but if you want to see some that did, watch my Shimpaku Forest video. All of the trees in that planting were grown from cuttings, and were about eight years old at the time of the video.

@bio1912 With juniper cuttings, timing is critical. In order to guarantee success, you have to start them in the spring, right at the point where the new buds are starting to turn bright green, and you will probably still lose about half of them even if you do things right.

I don't understand I did what you showed and for whatever reason my cuttings don't take root :(. However, it is only with junipers and the rooting hormone doesn't work for me I don't know why. I had olive tree cuttings and left them in a jar of water and they grew roots in a month and now are healthy trees. But Ijust can't get juniper cuttings to take root do you know what i am doing wrong or give me an idea please and thank you.

did this cutting take? great videos by the way

Yeah your right mine says most the same things, also says be careful of inhaling the air born dust. I think my biology teacher just made a big stink out of it and that's why I'm so careful with it. Anyway great videos!
-
Mine just says harmful if absorbed through skin, mild eye irritant, wash thoroughly after handling. However my bottle of hormone is quite old, and the newer formulas may be much stronger.
-
Yeah man read the bottle mine says highly toxic. When I saw the bottle all covered in powder on the outside I was like oh man!
-
I haven't tried the Rootex. As far as the Rootone, I haven't seen any warnings on the bottle, but I will check into it, and if there is something to it I will delete this video and make a new one where I use gloves of some kind. I would suggest latex gloves, but those can cause problems of their own to people who are sensitive.
-
Have you ever tried using the Rootex cloning gel rather than powder? Also careful with that powder your not suppose to get it on your skin its a carcinogen and mutagen.
-
No, unless you spread it too high on the cutting and it causes the growth of roots above soil level. The cutting will absorb as much hormone as it needs, and the excess will dissipate into the soil.

If you go back and look at my video entitled "Juniper Group", I grew all three of those junipers from cuttings, all taken from the same parent tree. I grow four varieties of juniper from cuttings, and right now I have about a dozen junipers, grown from cuttings, sitting around waiting for various bonsai projects. If your cuttings are rotting, the problem might be the soil -- most junipers do not need the rooting hormone, but it helps them root evenly and avoids "one sided roots."
