June Garden Tour: Celery, Peas, Carrots, Garlic, Beets, Mystery Plants and More!
Tips, Tricks
Lots of new growth in my garden over the last few months! I'm currently harvesting lots of peas, carrots, beets, celery, kale, lettuces, soooo much arugula and the last few strawberries. The lighting in this video is a bit overexposed, so I need to remember to film on a cloudy day next time. Follow along and comment with any advice, or let me know what you're growing in your garden. I'll be back next month with another update. Cheers! For recipes and more information, head over to http://coleycooks.com.

It's hot here in zone 9. What zone are you in?

Just watched this and it reminded me to plant some kale! It's a weird time to plant it but I have a partly shady area that stays cooler during the hot summer that I think they'll do well in. Thanks for sharing your garden!

Just found & subbed your channel (Gary sent me) :-)

Hi! Love the garden tour and seeing it all - the good and bad.
This is my second year growing tomatillos and I'm curious about one thing. I've been told that you must grow more than one of a variety in order for them to properly fruit. A single plant of a variety can't pollinate. I'm sorry if I'm not explaining it correctly. I don't have much experience. Maybe someone else out there knows what I'm trying to say and whether it's true. :p
Anyway, I look forward to seeing more. [Found you via Gary...] -
The difference between "pumpkin" and squash is not a very large one. There are about 5 species in the genus Curcurbita that we grow as "squash" and there are "pumpkins" in all five species. It's not the best video, but there are plenty of resources on how to figure out what species you have, and I suspect you have female flowers by now and can narrow it down even further based on the shape of the ovary developing at the base.

Someone beat me to the bulbs as they thought it was year 2 thing. Thanks for your honesty with successes and opportunities. My dinosaur kale looks similar to yours and I thought it looked good. Then I saw someone else's YouTube channel and his kale is the size of my chest. Thanks for making me feel normal again with my abilities. I am putting Music garlic in this year. First time doing garlic.

I'm guessing your strawberries got hit by some disease. Its important to find the right variety for your area that is resistant to diseases in your area. I strongly suggest you buy strawberries from a berry farm and not a nursery as the plants are much higher in quality. Strawberries do take up a lot of room if you don't grow them vertically and they are pretty tricky to grow optimally.

Coley your garden looks great. This was the first year I grew onions that bulbed..I saw some where on you tube, the person said the when the onion, you could bend the bulb down, give the energy back to the bulb(now that's a run on sentence). You Brussel sprouts could be lack of watering or the heat.

Those poor peppers are being smothered! haha! Nice update! I have been having insect pest issues for the past week or so. Started spraying neem oil to see if that helps. I don't know for sure, but, the squash(?) that you showed does look an awful lot like the acorn/winter squash I planted this year (first time). I think you're on the right track at least. When those tomatillas come in, you really need to try grilling some with onion. They make a great topping for brats / sausage. Whoa! with all this garden talk, I forgot I'm on a food channel. haha!

Beautiful garden, Coley! Greengardenguy1 has a really interesting vertical strawberry contraption in one of his videos. I want to build it next year if i get around to it. I have a lot of soil pests that eat them. Woodlice and slugs. This year i made little wiremesh tables to put under the fruits while they ripen but it is fiddly. At least i had my first unblemished strawberry this year and lots of them. I don't know what's going on with yours. Now i need that pickling video... It has been strange up and down weather here in Holland too. Made a lot of things bolt, including my onions and everyones onions it seems.

If you are looking for ideas for strawberry growing here are a few. Two youtubers have posted different ways they have grown them. One is "Organics Best" Urban Gardener in crate towers and the other is An American Homestead which did well growing them in gutters. You could also get one of those garden tower things that you water from the top. I have found that my third year berries are doing way better than the first or second year. I'm not sure why exactly. But, I have also had some berries do the same thing yours did. Stumped on that one myself. Your gardens looking great!

The garden is looking great. The carrots really end up looking like little bizarre sculptures when they twist.

Found you through The Rusted Garden. :) I really appreciate your candidness in showing your gardening struggles in addition to your successes. Too often I feel disappointed in my failures because I watch others show only their triumphs. I just put in my own melon patch and I'm attempting to grow them vertically for the first time in an effort to save garden space. I built a 1 x 6 foot raised bed out of cedar fence pickets and I'm using hog panel fencing leaned against my chicken coop for the melons to vine up. I hope that the melon vines will provide some much needed shade to the chickens over our hot Texas summer...and to get some juicy melons.

That garden is piled high with all manner of goodness! Your lettuces/greens/salad accoutrements are growing like wildfire. Must be nice to be able to grow that at this time of year. Never had the husk cherry, tried to grow them but they never germinated. I heard you mention that y'all(you guys) have had nice warm weather, but I've heard from my brother that there was a cold snap couple weeks ago? That could maybe kinda sorta have signaled the onion to send out a flower bud so that it ensures seeds for the next generation. Just a guess on my part. Nice garden and you've got a lot of work ahead of you in clearing those bolted greens. There's so much awesome in the garden, not enough space to write. Would be interesting to see how melons would turn out. Be well.

onion planted by bulbs can be confused and think they are actually a second year plant and will go to seed instead of developing a full onion.
