I NOTICED U PLACED YOUR EDGING AN IN .ABOVE THE GROUND SOIL,THAT SEEMS LIKE A GOOD IDEA SO YOUR ROCKS OR MULCH DON"T FALL OUT AS EASILY OUT OF YOUR BED.I RECENTLY READ THIS ARTICLE ON HOW TO INSTALL PLASTIC LAWN EDGING BY WIKIHOW , CHECK THIS OUT .http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Plastic-Lawn-Edging.
They said,:The trench should be as deep as your plastic lawn edging PLUS 2.5 cm. For example, if you are using 4-inch deep lawn edging, the trench will be 5 inches deep on the grass side.
The top of the edging is just level with the base of the growing grass. The top of the edging DOES NOT stick above the lawn; it will be almost buried and just visible after you back fill your trench!
The level of the soil should come up to, but not above, the top of the edging. Adjust the soil height as needed and tamp again.
THEY FURTHER EXPLAIN THEIR METHOD THIS WAY :
The purpose of plastic lawn edging is to keep the grass from growing into your flower beds. Grass grows from the roots which can survive as deep as 5 or 6 inches below the ground. Plastic lawn edging needs to be laid deep enough to prevent the deepest roots from growing underneath the edging - NOT to provide a surface for your electric weed-whacker (nor for holding the soil in!
I WAS WONDERING WHAT YOUR VIEWS ARE ,I WOULD THINK THAT IF ONES EDGING IS AT THE LEVEL OF YOUR SOIL THEN ALL YOUR MULCH COULD WASH OUT OF IT,especially if one puts their bed on a slope, like i am doing.
.What do u think?
Also how did you measure your trench to make sure your edging was 1 inch above your soil line?.Did u use a tape measure or just eyeball it.My bed is real rocky, adding sandy loam to 12 in deep holes to plant lavender plants. The top of my bed is uneven ,should i make that even first ?Then to to make sure my trench is say 3.5 in deep, from the top of my soil,(my edging is 5 in wide and 40 ft. long and i want my edging to be 1.5 in. above my soil line,1 in does not seem high enough because part of my bed slopes down ) should I measure the depth of my trench with a piece of thin wood about the thickness of my 5 in.plastic edging that is say 3.5 in. high and then add or take away soil from the bottom of my trench at short one ft. intervals along my edging trench. After i get my trench about 3.5 in . deep, then add my 5 in long 40 ft. long piece of edging to the trench. My ground is so hard that i could not just add or take away soil once i put my long 40 ft. edging in the soil or just giggle my edging up and down my trench at the same time i just add the long 40 ft. edging to my trench like I think someone else could easily do if they were placing their plastic edging in softer lawn or garden soil.
Does this make sense?IT IS ALOT OF WORK,if u have a better idea please let me know.i have to use a pick axe to dig my trench because I hit rock.
thank u -
Thanks so much for posting, really helpful.

I was hoping to see you install the stakes too. Thanks for the tips. I have installed plastic landscape edging before, but didn't think to flatten it first. Also didn't know there was a correct side to put toward the plant bed. Great instruction.

John, That was excellent ! Very good insights. What I gleaned was to use a good Knife to cut into the dirt, for less strain. Also, use a Wheel-barrow. That will make it much easier. Thanks for helping the rest us us, who are new to Landscaping. Adios, Donato
