Hi Kim, Hey just for giggles. Have you given much thought to try growing lettuce indoors hydroponically? Khang Starr has a cool video using a one gallon container. Just curious on your thoughts. Also the pepper plant in your front yard is that a cascabel or cascabella (wax pepper). Thanks to you and camera guy for all your gardening info. Russ :O)

We have a big possum family bugging my patio flower garden & raised beds driving my dogs nuts every night so its not worth it to try lettuces but i did learn a new trick online to germinate seeds without buggy indoor soil, lights & upping electric bill it worked on most of my glower seeds all sizes & radish seeds: big handfull of perlite in ziplock, add seeds, add a cap of peroxide to a bottled water and use that solution to wet the perlite in ziplock without standing water i close bag leave outside within the week the seeds are sprouted crazy/hot house effect NO MESS OR BUGS or stinky neem my husband hates neem smell. Then dpray plants later with plain water with a little blue dawn added. Bingo was his namo.

That must be nice but won't work here, as mostly very high 70's early am and warms too quick, good luck though.

Great tips it gets to be like 85 here but humidity. I might try this with some red leaf and an experiment and if it works its a matter of bringing it in but my schedule isn't the best. might have to wait for the end of august when we can cool down a bit here.

In California, what's the lowest temperature you guys have experienced in the winter?

Lettuce and brassicas are a fall, winter, and early spring crop here. I so wish I could have some decent lettuce in summer, since even the organic lettuce I buy at the market this time of year is quite bitter. Our highs are in the low 100's and the nightly lows are around 80 right now, average for this area in summer. Where's my home on the upper peninsula lol?

Great tip! I would try it, but we do not have air conditioning inside and the temperature indoors is 84F at noon (outside is usually 94-100F)
It's so bad we even had to shade our tomato plants at one point during the last heat wave (105F) -
i grew early curled Simpson lettuce this year and it has been doing amazing!
i researched it a bit and its suppose to be a very strong hearty variety more tolerant to the hot weather( Not that ive seen any of that this year summer.... ) But anyways i planted mine as soon as i could work the ground end of april in the garden i made with all my compost from last year and i have been harvest bowl after bowl everysince end of may till now! its only a small patch probably 3 ft by 5 ft completely full of lettuce but it just seems to keep coming back the more i cut haha and havent seen any signs of bolting yet and we are near the end of july so with my terrible brown thumb if ive had this much success i would recommend the variety to anyone lol
Great Video and thanks to your tips i finally have a somewhat successful garden.. better than it was atleast haha -
Nice tip, but I'm going to try growing various greens from seed this fall. Will be my first attempt to grow something from seed. Nervous...

Sounds like it's time to build an air conditioned sun room (hint hint camera guy lol)

This was so helpful. I thought I wouldn't be able to grow and lettuce leaves because of the heat. I'll definitely try this! Thanks Kim✌😁

As good as lettuce grows for me over half the year, its impossible to get good heads this time of year. So I do similar. Behind the pole beans etc. I try to put it where it gets morning sun and shaded the rest of the day, harvest it young. Thanks.

I left some leaf lettuce I'd already cut back several times grow for several weeks forgotten about this winter because I had some other lettuce I'd started and was harvesting from in my mini-greenhouse. I put some pellet fertiliser in with it. We had a week of rain and the lettuce put on a sudden growth spurt. They say harvest leaf lettuce young but it tasted great to me. I am also learning just how much to plant, underplant and it's a poor use of space and you won't have many little lettuce plants to harvest from, overplant and they don't get very big and tend to crowd each other and cause touching leaves to go soggy. I'm looking forward to harvesting throughout summer and just putting it in partial shade in my entryway to stop it from bolting. Containers is a great way to grow leaf lettuce but it never grows back fast enough for many salads for me, but good for sandwiches.
