Indoor Aquaponics System- How to grow vegetables in your aquarium the easy way
Tips, Tricks
You can grow many vegetables inside your aquarium with a small-scale aquaponics unit easily and inexpensively. There are no water pumps, no risk of overflow, no noise, and it is attractive. The waste produced from feeding your fish nourishes your vegetables and other plants. At the same time, your fish tank water is being cleaned. The need for water changes will dramatically decrease. Plants that can be grown directly in the water (or in a floating raft aquaponics system) are lettuce, spinach, kale, cilantro, basil, and many other herbs and vegetables. I will post other videos that go into planting seedlings, water conditioning, and other safety issues. These will cover a variety of issues to consider, but be sure to read up on aquaponics safety before you start. There are many factors to consider that I won't cover. What I present is not a comprehensive tutorial on aquarium aquaponics. But with a little knowledge and patience, you can grow a variety of vegetables indoors throughout the year. If you have any tips about aquaponics, please post these in the comments section. Any indoor vegetable growing ideas are greatly appreciated.

Nice video content! Sorry for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you researched - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is an awesome one of a kind guide for learning how to expand your produce minus the normal expense. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my best friend Jordan got astronomical results with it.

really good idea...i like it the way you use the space in the aquarium, where is ur next video?

Hi!! I have a question... do you need an electronic tank filter? or does the aquaponic system filters the water? it does... right? so... the only thing I'll need is a good pump?

I've been studying home aquaponics and discovered an awesome website at Keiths Ponics Site (check it out on google)

There are several factors in learning aquaponics. One resource I found that succeeds in merging these is the Keiths Ponics Site (check it out on google) without a doubt the most helpful info i've seen. look at this great resource.

Should you desire to build an operational, basic, efficient and low priced aquaponics system, you must realize how to put it as a whole and keep it up properly.

Hi that looks like a great system. I have known about aquaponics for a couple of years now and I backed a Kickstarter campaign for a very small 1.5 gallon aquaponics tank and i have just started using it. So far so good.
The only problem is that I live in Austria and we have the strictest rules in the world for keeping fish and the smallest tank that you are legally allowed to use for fish is 12" x 12" x 24" which is about 13 gallons. (60 litres) So i really would like to get a bigger tank but I want to do an aquaponics system with it and yours looks really good. It also looks like this could easily be scaled up for larger tanks too.
It's been over a year since you posted this video and I wonder how it went, did you ever have to change the water (other than to top it up) and did is stay clean? Also did all the fish survive? My son really want to have some more fish. :-) Thanks in advance. Once again great work. -
Great job! I want one,haha

Where did you buy the floating raft? I have a 50 gallon aquarium.

Don't you find your fish eat your roots? Mine always did.
Also, the key to aquaponics is the bacterial colonies, specifically nitrosomonus and nitrobacter, there are others that are important as well but these two key bacteria are what mostly complete the nitrogen cycle which is the turning of ammonia, and ammonium (the exhalation, and excretion from the fish into plant soluble nitrates). In order for these bacteria to thrive they need a place to colonize which is highly porous. So things like rough gravel, I've personally used 3/4 driveway gravel (not actually from a drive way, it's just what it's called at my local rock quarry) work really well. You can also use things like hydroton, also known as expanded clay pebbles. Anything that has a lot of porosity will work assuming it doesn't somehow poison the bacteria or fish of course. I personally prefer driveway gravel because it has built in PH buffer properties. If your system ever becomes highly acidic, the acids will eat away at the lime in the gravel and help buffer it up.
From what the experiements and research I've done on Aquaponics, the best way to have a strong bacteria colony is to use a flood and drain system. In these kind of system you have a container (containing your gravel, or other high porosity medium) that floods with water, and then drains. That way the bacteria never dry out, and also never suffocate from lack of oxygen. This kind of flood and drain container can also double as a grow bed and plants can be planted directly into it due to it's ideal water/air mixture.
Putting in red wriggler worms as also a huge benefit as worms will eat build ups of fish poop and excess fish food that ends up in the bed, and in turn the worms will excrete a whole plethora of bacteria found in their shit, also known as worm castings. You can also use fresh water shrimp known as daphne to produce a similar result.
Basically, to sum up everything I'm saying: Aquaponics is about eco system. The more diverse and strong the bacteria colonies are, the better plant growth you get, and the more resilient the system becomes, much like nature.
Hope that helps! -
Nice Video! Sorry for the intrusion, I would love your thoughts. Have you researched - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (just google it)? It is a great exclusive product for learning how to expand your produce with the clever art of aquaponics minus the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my work buddy at very last got cool success with it.

What type of fish do you have?
