Hydroponic Lettuce Tip Burn and Calcium Deficiency
Tips, Tricks
Let's take a look at Tip Burn and Leaf Spot in lettuce. We need to hit the fundamentals with every grow - if we hit those, likelihood of success is almost guaranteed. When we fall off, revert back to the fundamentals to troubleshoot! Thank you to Steven Evans for the question. Leave comments with recommendations. It's how we learn.

In this case the calcium block out is caused by starting with a ppm/ec too high, could a large drop over a couple days have the same outcome? When my nft channel bibb varieties hit about day 35 i started seeing tip burn and leaf spotting/browning at pH6.0 ec1.0 after showing consistent growth and health to this point with that nutrient solution. from day 33-35 the ec plummeted and the pH rose as high as 7.6 (unattended over the holiday weekend). I bumped my EC up to 1.2 and have seen stability but no improvement. Thanks!

sound advice, went to 1/2 strength on my maxigrow and had sold results

"We're just two guys growing lettuce.." That had me rolling!

Good job John, as usual. A recommendation for Steven is to use "Daylight" 6500k T8 bulbs in his lighting system - T8 is cooler than T5's - T5's put out a bunch of heat. Then, start off with the light sitting on top of the seedlings and prgressively raise it as they grow. I agree with you - lettuce only requires 500 - 700 PPM to grow - be careful though, once you dial it in you'll have more lettuce than you can possibly eat. I use both Masterblend/Cal nitrate and/or J.R. Peter's/Cal nitrate at a rate of 3, 3, 2 grams per gallon of whichever one I happen to be using at the time - that's 3 grams of J.R. Peters, 3 grams of Cal Nitrate and 2 grams of Epsom Salts - and my lettuce grows out of it's 2" net cup. This mixture causes Mizuna to grow 3 times the size of a Mizuna plant sitting in a 5gal grow bag.

Good stuff! There's some good science in there that I didn't know about, especially about a plant not being to revert once it misses the boat.
My lettuce is two months old and very healthy, and just now starting to get a little brown around the edges. I told my wife, let's just eat it up because I'm dying to start a new grow anyway. -
Just keep in mind dude, you're an entertainer, and from the audience perspective you appear on the same screen as Breaking Bad and Walking Dead. Like it or not you are going to have fans, that's just how it works. :)

Most of the label Instructions aren't for Lettuce growers. Every item John mentioned is important to avoid tip burn or edge burn. There's one thing John didn't mention and that's 'Fluoride', I don't mean fluoride from your drinking water but from unrinsed perlite (for those using perlite). Great job on this John, some forms of Lettuce are like the Canary in the mine.

lol I did the same thing when I 1st started. Burn baby burn.

I noticed lettuce varieties can be more or less forgiving. I've kratky'd romaine, buttercrunch, and black seeded simpson in the same tote. The romaine was flawless, the buttercrunch had a few spots on the tips of the oldest leaves and the black seeded simpson was pretty scorched. Gotta get a PPM reader soon!

i realized that those labels are incorrect, i winded up with 8 thousand ppm and it killed everyplant i had

Great info yet again. Thanks for posting the video. I will be starting over with my lettuce soon. Going to harvest what I have and lower my maxigrow levels as well as get a cheap ppm meter.

Thanks for sharing your experience, appreciate your videos.

Thanks so much for the video, John. Rest assured, I am just getting started with hydroponics.

The nice part of lettuce, is starting over means just a few weeks. And, it'll turn out great.
