I am surprised that the tree places do not charge you for the chips----why would they give them to you for free!!?? NICE!!

I have in my back yard several trees that are growing wild---I did not plant them!
Can I get someone to come out, cut the trees down and chip them up for me?? These would be good for the garden-right!?

i have a question I hope you can hel answer it I would really apreciate it, I recently went and got free wood chips from my local tree recycling center but the wood chips have a smell like cow poop and it is really strong is there anyway I can get rid of the odor? plz help I'm thinking of doing a mixture of water and baking soda but I have roses and i dont know if it is safe for gardening I know very little about gardening I hope you can help me ... thank you... :)

Love it. I just moved to the city after living in the mountains for more than 20 years and I'm excited about the recycling they have here that they didn't have back home.. (most recycled waste went to power plants) But for $15 I can get 5 yards of mulch here! Thats a scoop the size of your minivan almost haha.. 2000-4000 lbs of wood chips mixed with leaves and grass and bushes and all that ground up and partially on it's way to composting.. Best part is I can pick it up less than 5 miles away. It takes me all day to unload the truck.. it really is no joke how much 5 yards is. Thankfully during this move I sold a few of my vehicles and picked up a big dually flatbed that can carry all 5 yards at once. I had to build some wooden sides for it though.. $15 really isn't a lot to ask for that much mulch. The decorative stuff that is all one color goes for $19 a yard, almost $100 for the same amount of mulch. As I see it, I could buy 50 truckloads of mulch for the same price as a decent wood chipper, but I'd probably take two years to chip up enough wood and leaves to fill one truckload even if I trimmed up all the branches on my land. Of course.. I still have an ad out on craigslist looking for free mulch.. and I''ve harassed all the line trimmers, arborists, and landscaping companies that I have a free drop off site that could save them a trip across town.. =)

Very interesting. I would like to try this. When using wood chips from a tree services, is there any danger of spreading disease to your garden/trees if the trees they cut down and shredded had some kind of disease or fungus?

I also have fibromyalgia, so I know what you mean. I garden for exercise, too. Then I am dead tired and probably good for nothing the day after.

Thank you for explaining that those of us with Fibro need to get some exercise and can do light work, but when we do a chore like this it slaps us onto the couch for the rest of the day, and maybe a few more. I appreciated that comment. My neighbor understands this, and so do a few of my friends and family, but most don't and think I'm just lazy.

You must add nitrogen on sawdust and wood chips if they are not aged.
I like sawdust and the look, but they will take all your nitrogen out of the soil.
