How to Use a Cold Frame Alberta Urban Garden
Tips, Tricks
It has only been a few days and the Cold Frames are working exceptionally well already! With in 20 minutes the temperature had gone up by 20 degrees Celsius! Over the past few days the cold frame has often been much warmer despite the cold temperatures outside. It works so well that it has even hit 45C (113F)! I thought I would ask Patrick from the One Yard Revolution channel on YouTube (Link Below) to join me and answer some of my questions including the following! 1. What kind of plants do best under a cold frame? 2. How do you use the cold frame to direct sow plants early? 3. Do you have any tips or tricks for using cold frames in your garden? 4. Is there anything I should be aware of ? Make sure to check out his channel https://www.youtube.com/user/OneYardRevolution Some of my favorite childhood memories are of gardening with my parents and brothers. This channel is about low cost organic urban gardening in zone 3. I am by no means an expert gardener however I love to share my experiments and journey garden year round. Please feel free to join the conversation and if you think you might like this channel subscribe. Have a great day! Can you please write down all those veggies which he stated as I could not make out the names fully with their spelling. Kale, Spinach I did get, but the others i did not.
I watched a couple dozen videos about cold frames and I think how you can improve yours is by 1. insulating it with foam 2, little larger ones (not taller) would hold heat better 3. a small 60w light bulb will maintain the temp steady 4. sink the frame a few inches deeper so the ground warms it up 5. getting an automatic heat opening vent or a lid mechanism which limits how long the lid is closed on sunny days. I think if you are serious about cold frames it would be great to have a delux cold frame with all or most of these features. -
I like the link up with other gardeners Stephen and sharing tips or ideas. I love Patrick's channel. Great clip shared!

I enjoyed your videos on cold frames and would like to build and use cold frames to have some greens during the winter. Very helpful. New phrase: Monkey Up!

It does not look like your cold frames are angled. Am I seeing this right? Thanks for your answer.

as this is a follow up on a previous video, it would be AWESOME to have a link to the one you're referencing

Thank you Stephen and Patrick! I'm going to plan on building cold frames this fall!

Ok bro you got 24 degrees You are Canadian! Where are your shorts :) Great video bro and very informative. I really liked the questions and answers with Patrick, very nice bro!

Thanks for showing how to use a cold frame, Stephen & OneYardRevolutiion! I'm concerned about plants getting overheated on sunny days. If at home simply open the cold frame. While away, a computer cooling fan or an automatic vent opener might solve the overheating problem.

I find all your videos so helpful thanks for posting

Those are some beautiful cold frames. It'll be fun to see how this improves your gardening :) You also have great friends to talk too and share gardening knowledge. Thank you Patrick for taking the time to help us out ;)

Well done on the video. Nice idea with the interview technique which kept it interesting.

Nice update, Stephen!
Cold frames are great "friends" for us northern gardeners. :)
As I write this, I managed to hit over my coffee mug all over the working table.., hang on a sec..
Back again. :)
I used cold frames before I got the greenhouse. The ants liked them very much, and nested in them as soon they got the chance. :) I dont know how much ants you have at your locations, but this was one of the issues I had here with the method.
The ants didn`t seem to mind the water drenching either. :)
Like this new combination of world spread gardeners in the same vid. Brings us much closer to one another.
All the best,
Halvor. -

Have you started Kale yet? I can't find any seed anywhere.

Thanks for the info! This year I've got to set up a cold frame in the fall to test it out.

Hi Stephen,
I just wanted to give you an update on the greenhouse from this morning. It did get down to 34.7 F in the greenhouse last night. I guess that is around 1.5 C. When I went out to greenhouse around 11:00, I saw many of the smaller plants had droopy leaves, as well as a few of my bigger plants. It was all of the eggplants and peppers that had fruit on them. I don’t think that I lost anything but I brought all of my plants back into the house as a precaution because it is suppose to get down to around –13 to –14 C at least 3 times this next week. My heater can’t keep up when it gets cooler than –8 C. It is a good lesson. Friday, it is suppose to warm back up and it looks to stay warm for at least the next week. I will move everything back out then.
