Those "little knobs" you refer to are called "bands" and they are where next years' branches will spring from on the plant. That's important to know if you want to plan the shape and size of your plant. Also, on almost ALL varieties of hydrangea, the blooms occur on last years' old wood; so why are you showing people to trim out the "dead wood?"

Thanks for watching our videos! The hydrangea in the video is very established. At least seven years old. I am not sure of the variety name but most hydrangea are easy to grow as long as you give them part shade (not too much) and water in the heat of the summer for the first few years. Hydrangeas will grow whether you prune them or not. If it looks dead and scrawny I would wait to see what happens. If there are buds on the plant, it will grow. If you have no buds and you break off a tip of the stem and it is dried wood it may have died. I would wait to see what it does. I have thought that I lost hydrangeas before and cut them to the ground and new starts have come up. If nothing by June, try that or replace .
