well i was hoping to see something a bit more in depth, like where to plant it (sun/part shade), spacing, companion plantings etc.. dig a hole and backfill is not really good enough..

I was thinking the very same thing. The roots should have been pulled out from the congested mess that's created when it was in the container. Failure to do so encouraged root girdling which will kill the tree as it grows. I know magnolias have sensitive roots, but you can't just skip this process. It may appear easy for TV (or youtube) videos, but it's very misleading to those who are watching and don't know better.

why didnt you break apart the the roots a bit before planting it?
