How to tell when your homegrown cantaloupes are ripe
Tips, Tricks
I've been growing cantaloupes for about 5 years. The first year I grew them I didn't know how to tell when the melons were ripe, so I kept giving the biggest melon a squeeze to see if it was ripe. By the time it was ripe, it had a big bruise--a bad spot that had to be cut out. Don't make my mistake; watch this video to see how to tell when a cantaloupe is ripe.

First video I found about harvesting cantaloupe. Thanks for sharing. None of my stems look like they are ready to go yet, and it's starting to cool off. hopefully a few more sunny days to fix that.

I wish I would have watched this a few hours ago, I picked mine too soon as it didn't pop off the vine easily. I had to twist it off. At least I have one more growing on the vine albeit tiny.

This was excellent. Thank you so much...I almost picked one too early.

Missey: I had to hand pollinate out here, due to the lack of bees. The female blossoms have an immature fruit, the males a straight stem. Some of my neighbors use a camels hair brush to transfer the pollen from the male blossoms to the femmes, but I am to lazy for that. I just strip the petals off of the male, and doctor the femme with same. It has worked for me.

Thanks for the insight. It has been wet in Texas, so I will take on board the styrofoam recommendation

How long does it take for the cantaloupes to start growing? I have a few vines with lots of flowers.
