With regard to your melon trellis, I have an idea. As the vines climb to the top and the melons gain weight near the higher reaches, you'll need some way to support the fruit since they will be too far from the ground. Maybe you can use some sort of flexible material like pantyhose to build hammocks to support the hanging melons.

Thanks for the tips Kim. I'm going to grow watermelon for the first time. Hopefully it's warm enough here. Thinking about the small variety.

Another good idea is soft drink cups from convenience stores. they come in sizes up to 64 oz. and are normally thrown away. instead I like to save the 32 oz. size and use them they are hard plastic and approx. the same size as some of the pot holders that some with garden herbs from the home improvement garden areas. the deeper size encourages deeper root growth and in the case of tomatoes I like to start the plants near the bottom and can cover the tops with saran wrap to make a miniature green house out of each cup. As the plants grow taller more dirt is added to encourage root growth along the stem. You probably don't need that in California but I garden in Colorado at 8900 feet and little tricks help.

Yay I'm so excited to grow along with you this year. I'm a long time fan and started posting videos last year of our garden to share with friends and family. This year we have 3 melon varieties in common. Orangeglo, Ali Baba, and Green Machine. Though I wish I had seen the video before I started my seeds. Mine are in little peat pots. They took some time t germinate but they look like they are ready to go out soon. When is a good time to plant out? Should I wait for more than the seed leaves?

I live in No. California, moved here 3 years ago and I am STILL trying to get the growing season down, in my mountains the growing season comes late, we had snow last night, and is short. I have chosen for short season, tomato, peppers, and such, but have not found short season melons, any advice on growing?

I once had trouble putting holes in the bottom of the cups. They sealed out the water because of the ring around the bottom,be sure the tray you put them in has ridges or now i put holes in the lower bottom of the sides.

I save my starbucks cups for seedlings, this helps me justify my expensive "habit" ;]

Hey Kim! Just acknowledging and remembering your trouble with mice/rats last year eating your watermelons and Peas! Ratpocalypse 2015 is in full swing here in West Texas and I am seeing and dealing with a "new rat" (at least new to me) species or subspecies that no one can seem to identify! Glue traps, the Mighty T-Rex snap traps, are not working! This "New Guy" to this part of the world is a very small dark gray rat that is a vegetarian! Not a mouse, not a baby Norway or cotton rat?? To big for a mouse trap and too small for the "factory" trigger on most rat traps! Weird little guy and he seems to prefer only tomato plants/leaves! This morning after tinkering with and baiting all of my traps with "suckers" off of my tomato's and small pieces of cucumber, every one of my traps had a rat! Hope this info helps you or one of your growing gardening community."Kill em All! - David

why do you use a potting mix instead of a seed starting mix, as in my experience this will give the seed the best possible start. As long as the seedling have its cotyledons (seed leaves) which will provide food (around 4 weeks). I also see that you do not use vermiculite or perlite in your mixture, as this will help drainage. What is your opinion on this.
To aid seed germination when I am growing in pots is to cover the pot with cling film, as this will prevent moisture loss and promote a high humid environment. This normally increases germination rate by a couple of days. You remove the cling film when the seedling starts to emerge. Do this otherwise you may get dampening off disease. it will be very interesting on would support structure you decide.
