Thanks Jonathan, You have been a great mentor for me. I am starting my business this spring and I feel very lucky to have found your youtube channel. There are not a lot of legitimate business owners out there willing to share what they have learned. Thanks again and I really appreciate your shared knowledge and experience.

Hi man. I'm a 15 year old kid in 9th grade. I want to make around 150 dollars a week this summer cutting lawns. FYI I live in. Residential neighborhood in Kansas City. Do u think it is possible for me too make that much money with a standard self-propelled push mower and a truck. I figure that I would have to do six lawns a week to make that much. Thanks

This channel is amazing!! I'm new so please bare with newbie questions. What are 5 Arounds? You also seem to make a distinction between "street marketing" and other things I would consider (in my layman head) to be street marketing like door hangers and street mailers. Please help!

I say stop charging people for a simple in and out job, I charge 25 a hr and spend at least a hr on site, people who mow, string trim, edge and blow in 11 minutes and charge 45 are stupid! People want a basic lawn service that makes them feel important! I started in my own subdivision and with a snapper rear engine rider and a dump cart filled with a back pack blower a string trimmer and a hedger and edger attachments, customers said that I gave 45 dollar service for 25 dollar price, and often times felt like they were cheating me and offered outstanding tips. If you buy a truck and trailer and big baller equipment before you have any hopes of a contract then STOP! Your going to fail! Start cheap but give grate service, let your work sell your business and start in your own naborhood! People will see that you care about them and then you will have there support and just like with the new TV with the best deal and the best options, people will talk just like that about you! 1st year I did old peoples lawn for free as I felt they were too old, a month later I had 9 paying customers who paid on time and as stated, with tip! They need you because you are there to beautify there lawn whereas the "other" guy wants to get in get out & get paid! Love your job and understand that you are not the boss, your customers are!

Further to my diatribe about this subject is that you need insurance to cover your business in case there is an accident.
In Australia we call it Third Party Insurance. This covers damage to other parties.
As well I would say you only need Microsoft Exell is the the most basic you need at the start. You will get an accountant at some stage and he will advise. -
I don't have 10 minutes to talk about how to start a lawn care business, but I would like to add my view.
I have had a lawn care and gardening business for over 17 years and this is my look back at what you should think about when starting and moving forward in your business.
You need: yourself, good equipment, uniforms and business cards.
You can expand on all these, but this is the basics.
I assume you know how to mow and edge. Think about low weight but quality equipment. You need an edger. Don't blow your whipper on a tough edge.
Backpack blower is a must as well as a hand held. Speed is profit.
My choice is Husqvarna for whipper, blower and hedger. Stihl for backpack blower and Honda for mowers and edgers. I am in Australia and these products work for me. Where ever you are I am sure there is the right stuff. Remember it is tax deductible and more reliable.
Learn to do all things well and treat your customers like your equipment.
It is only goodwill that keeps us employed.
Change your oil and filters when necessary. Maintenance is vital.
Remember that anyone who works for you will fuck up your equipment.
The reality is that no one can do it as good as you.
Read about anything to do with your product. You have to learn about laying turf and pruning. Always say yes to these things and then look it up or ask your local nursery. And yes you can sub contract out on big jobs.
A HUGE PART OF THIS BUSINESS IS THAT YOU ARE ON TIME AND THAT YOU DO NOT LET ALCOHOL SLOW YOU DOWN.
Apart from the relationships you have with your residential customers you have to maintain and promote your relationships with your strata management companies.
To make real money out of strata work,(to Americans that is apartment complexes)
you have to get the lawns, gardening and strata cleaning. Also do high pressure cleaning. That can be driveways, pathways and bin cleaning.
Strata companies would rather deal with one company.
ANOTHER MAIN THING IS: DO NOT BE AFRAID TO QUOTE PROPERLY.
Do not quote to just get the job. (Don't worry you will judge yourself in hindsight).
In the end it is about hard work not the would be's who are could be's.
When someone says entrepreneur, I think of bullshit.
Besides all that I have had a great time and still am.

A truck to get you from point A to point B with a push mower, weed-eater, leaf blower and water will get you a long ways.. craigslist is the next generation of door to door knocking. Saves time and money. Surpasses the problem of no payouts from knocking on doors. Remember your customers see the finished project. So treat everyone's lawn like you would your own. How you treat their lawns is how the customers treat you.

Thank you for the video, I have been in this business for five years, all I need are my marketing skills so I can build, grow, and hire! Again thank you! :)
-
Thanks for this wonderful video! Starting a business is not that easy as it see. I think the most important factor on starting a business is that you love what you are doing and you know what you are doing! :)

What software would you recommend?

Off and leave fast so I don't have to pay more than 15 bucks. I was Gina buy a 2 stroke backpack sprayer so I could hole yards with braodleaf killer then buy a overseeder and plug aerator so ppl could have golf corse like lawns. But it would be a waste II would never get to show them how nice it could be.
-
Like a golf corse. I love seeing beautifully perfect grass and I hate when I offer to do that for ppl an make there's beautifully and they have no respect for there lawn how nice I could make it. No pride at all in there yard so they don't care, just chop it
