How to Solarize Your Garden for Weed Prevention
Tips, Tricks
MMM 74 - For as long as long as I can remember working in the garden in any form, the inevitable process of weeding has always been present. I had come to accept it as an unavoidable fact of gardening since I don't want to use chemicals to rid myself of them, until I talked to Sonja Birthisel one day last fall. Sonja is a PhD student who has done research in weed ecology and management, and conveniently she is also a friend of mine from college. She suggested that I solarize my soil this spring, and now I am doing just that. After thoroughly irrigating my garden and the additional grassy space that I'm annexing for the garden this year, I laid down multiple rows of thick plastic to "bake" the soil for about six weeks. Wish me luck! Thanks for your wisdom and advice, Sonja! Is that a jar of peanut butter in the background?

Great video!
My dad always had my sisters and I lay out black plastic sheeting over the rose beds (after filling paper bag after paper bag after paper bag with weeds first), and then mulch over the top of the plastic. For the vegetable garden areas I think we alternated between black plastic and clear, whatever was laying around at the time. I can't recall if the rose beds were tilled after the remaining weeds died down or just covered with mulch, but all of the gardens were amended with manure from my grandparents' dairy.
Once I decide where I'm putting my garden this year, I'll have to experiment with both kinds of plastic to see which gets better results. -
Backed up by research is a good way to start any project. I will be interested to see if your results are typical for this technique.

Curtis stone, urban farmer has been doing this for couple of years. check out his channel

I'm interested in seeing the results. I used to till my garden then maintain it with my stirrup hoe. I found the work very relaxing.
