I recommend looking at your tank with nature in mind. I've got both a great guide and DVD on how i setup the substrate for this tank on. http://www.howtosetupaplantedtank.com/ When you see a beautiful setting in nature there is usually some open space. Like when you see a bad ass looking tree out in a field that catches your eye. Open space is important in any planted aquarium design. You need to have open space to pull the design out more. Open space creates depth in an aquarium. If you look at many award winning planted tanks, you can see that they all use open space. In a way open space defines the plants more. You will see this often in my planted tank designs. I also like to use rough triangles as a guidelines for how to slope my planted tank designs. You can see in the 220 planted tank that I am going from left to right (which is typically how I do it.) The left side of the fishtank is full while it opens to more space on the left side. I use little plants in the front as well as open gravel spaces. I think this adds to the look of a design and how to get a better planted aquarium design. Open up your designs a little with more space above the plants and with the gravel.
