How to Seed Start Asparagus Indoors - Save a Year by Starting Early! - TRG2016
Tips, Tricks
Many people plant Asparagus by planting 1 year old crowns/roots. Once planted you have to wait 3 years before harvesting asparagus spears as to give the roots time to mature and establish. If you start Asparagus by planting seeds in the ground, you may have to wait 4 years before you can harvest. However, if you seed start them indoors you can cut a year off your harvesting wait time. Gary, I'm trying to grow asparagus my first time this year in raised beds. Most beds I've seen only have asparagus. Can I interplant other veggies without damaging them? Kale for instance? I usually just harvest the leaves and leave the root. Thanks

April 1st? What grow zone are you?

When you plant them outside in your bed, how far apart do you plant them? Also, can you plant other plants in the same bed until they get established? Two years ago I had a 4 x 4 bed of asparagus and at the end of the season I saw a lot of crawling bugs in the soil and the next year only 2 asparagus came up. Something destroyed the whole bed. Don't know what bug it was as I had a ruptured disk and couldn't get low enough to examine. All I know, is I didn't have any asparagus left the next year. I have since planted other stuff (garlic, kale, sage thyme) in this bed and have noticed that 2 asparagus came up. Sooo, do you think I should plant the transplants into this bed or start another one? Thanking you in advance for your wonderful videos and your time. It is very much appreciated. I live in 6/7 zone.

Moving from apartment to home next year so will wait to plant these, blackberries, and strawberries. I would be sad to leave them.

Really informative videos which I have really enjoyed watching .A great tonic on a cold winter's day [..snow is blowing down from Scotland!]

I liked your video very much, but I must say that planting asparagus seeds is a young people "thing"... at my age, I've decided to plant the plants/roots... and even then, it still takes 3 to 4 years to reap a semi-good harvest. This is not a plant for those who "WANT IT NOW." Thank you for your video.

I'm wanting to start Asparagus this year, but we are hoping to move in 3-5 years. Do asparagus do o.k in pots? At least this way I could bring them with me! If not--do they transplant ok after 3-4 years if needed? I'm in zone 6a

Any Asparagus variety you reccoment for warmer climate(lets say zone 10)?
And can these plants tollerate shady slots? -
very cool,we did all our seed order from BakerCreek this year..very happy with them so far

Asparagus is one of my favorite ones to watch grow. I can't eat from our crowns yet, they struggles due to deer buffet, but now they're regaining ground and replenishing what was lost. I threw some parsley seeds around them, a companion plant, so far everything seem hunky dory.

You are not wrong. There were 1 to 4 seeds in each berry I harvested last year from my UC157 asparagus. Tons of seeds off my plants. Your vid is quite timely. I'm about to vid mine as well! Very good video Gary. I also like Baker Creek for seed.

Informative and well timed as I just started filling cups to start asparagus seeds myself:)

I planted 30 1 year old crowns a couple years ago. Last year I think all my crowns came back (maybe 1 or 2 didn't). This will be the first year I start harvesting. Can't wait! I went with the crowns because I didn't want to wait an extra year.

Hi Gary I don't have the room to grow asparagus but is of interest. Have you ever thought about growing rhubarb from seeds or crowns, as per se this is the favourite amongst professional chef, but be warned from seeds it can be erratic. As you grow masses of different seeds, a question that come to mind is how big is you seed grow area, as often you seem to always run out. Oh to have a luxury of a heated greenhouse , where you can grow as many varieties as big as the greenhouse allows.

Very very informative. Time is the factor that holds me back from planting asparagus. The asparagus transplants looks so nice I might just be tempted to give it a go :-)

Why on earth would anyone wait 4 years for something like apparatus to grow? This makes no sense to me. I'd rather just mosey on over to my local While Foods and be done with it.

Good video Gary. I didn't know you can start these indoors.

I got some seeds last year from a big box store. No germination. I also got some crowns which did well. Last fall I got some seeds from my plants. So I will try to get some of those to germinate. You are right there is often more then one seed in the seed berry. Best wishes Bob.
