How to Save & Store Egg Shells for use in the Garden: Organic Calcium
Tips, Tricks
In a recent video I showed how I use egg shells in the garden to give calcium to tomato plants. A couple of people asked what my process was for saving and storing the shells. Here is a quick video that hopefully will answer those questions. Egg shells are great to give to chickens as additional calcium as well. Some people prefer to give it in a separate feed bowl so the chickens will only take what they need. Others will occasionally sprinkle it on feed to ensure that they are getting it. I choose to treat my chickens with cooked oatmeal with plain yogurt and the egg shells sprinkled in. We only do this a couple of times a month. Who in the hell was the PERSON that had to get her butt in the video. WTF why do women always have to do this...

How do you store your eggshells until you have enough to cook in the oven to bake ?in a Safeway to prevent bacteria and disease in the kitchen.

Great idea with egg shells will have to crush with rolling pin haven't got a crusher how long do you leave the eggshell in the oven? We have a RAYBURN ;) Michelle.

Is part of the purpose of putting them in the oven to dry the shells, in addition to cooking whatever bacteria might be there? I would imagine grinding wet eggshells would produce a pasty substance rather than powder. Also, you could use a food processor in lieu of the grinder, couldn't you?

Please just give me the egg and vinegar recipe i watched Gary's video and still don't get it...I'm new to this and need it soon

Dies matter if I boil the eggs? Since my dad works in a hotel and can possibly get me loads of egg shells. And if not after I use the egg and save the shells won't it stink up till I have enough to bake 'em? And is doing the in the sun another way of drying

Thanks for your inspiration, Blake! My crushed eggshells/homemade bone meal just went into the garden!

I just did this today, thanks to you Sir! I'm sure it will help out my garden!

We do this but also with bananna peels. It dries out and we grind the egss with the dried bananna peels and put them in the planting holes.

Once you grind them up in the coffee grinder, you could put them in a dish and then in the microwave for about one min. Doing this would make sure there were no bacteria or pathogens in the mix. Just a thought. This is what they were recommending to do with our mail in the early 2000's when we had the anthrax mail scare going on. I figure if it will kill anthrax, it should be able to kill pretty much any living organism. Thanks for the video and the tutorial. I am going to start saving egg shells and using them like you do. Thanks again.

Thanks Blake for the tip. We usually compost all our eggshells, but this seems to be a faster way to put the calcium in. And being able to meet your furry family members was a definite plus!

I definitely intend on trying this on my plants. I've already asked my mom to star saving whatever eggshells she can! But we don't use too many eggs so it's gonna take me a while to build a good quantity of powder.
Would you believe I can't seem to find a simple coffee grinder like the one you use? All I find for sale in my country's stores are these huge, pro-like coffee makers that include grinders or whatever and cost an arm and a leg. I haven't been able to find a single cheap coffee grinder that I could buy for this purpose (since we don't drink coffee, so we don't need a super expensive coffee machine or anything xD). ¬¬ I found one in Amazon, but I have no idea if it will work with my voltage and the shipping costs are twice the price of the coffee grinder, so it's not really an option. u_uU
Anyways. I'll probably make the powder manually, but I'll definitely try it. :D
Thanks for this! -
I do the same thing, I also use the crushed eggshells as calcium supplement in our smoothies, worm food for our worm bin as well! Great video thanks for sharing!

I have been using your idea. The grinder is a great way to pulverize everything so it is more set to decompose quickly in the garden so your plants can use it.

Great idea when it comes to using the coffee grinder +Blake Kirby ! I save my egg shells toobut never thought about grinding them up like that. I've been putting them in our homemade dog food. Great video brother!
