How to Save Pumpkin Seeds, When to Harvest & a Few Other Tips.
Tips, Tricks
Hi folks. Have been asked how we save pumpkin seeds & when is the best time to harvest the fruit so thought I'd answer them in a clip for those interested. Also added in a few tips that might help you out. Here's the list of the Cucurbitaceae & which groups will cross pollinate with others. It might come in handy if you're wanting to save pure seed or even if you want to try your hand at breeding a new variety for yourself. http://www.walterreeves.com/food-gardening/squashpumpkincucumberwatermelon-pollination-explanation/ Subscribing to us here at Bits Out the Back is as easy as clicking below, http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=bnbob01 You can also find Bits Out the Back various social media where we post mini updates on the aquaponics, chooks, worms, wicking bed gardens & other small tidbits daily. www.facebook.com/Bitsouttheback http://bitsouttheback.tumblr.com/ http://instagram.com/bits_out_the_back @bits_out_the_back https://www.pinterest.com/bitsouttheback/ https://twitter.com/RobsUrbanFarm @RobsUrbanFarm Have a great one everyone. I love the rubber band idea 3:22 I never thought of that. Thanks. :-)

Is it ok to dry the seeds in the sun? or does that kill them?

I recently started gardening, I mixed sawdust and woodchips
from the local carpenters with potting soil and some corn cobs and other
kitchen scraps. The ratio is about 1/3 potting soil 1/3 sawdust and 1/3 corn
cobs. I do not know what type of wood or
if the wood is treated with chemicals such as arsenic etc or untreated.
Have you ever heard about any poising from sawdust. Have you
ever used sawdust and was it treated or untreated etc. What is your take on it? -
great hints tips and information thanks for sharing all the best and happy gardening

Heya Rob
Have a simple & great tasting recipe for the seeds you don't want to re-seed :
Put the roughly cleaned seeds on a plate, with salt, squeeze a lemon and add a bit of chili, and let it dry for a week or maybe two on your heater or any source of heat (you prolly don't use a heater that much).
Then put the seeds in your blender until they are a course powder (skin & all), and sprinkle it over your curries. Think the Nepalese people use this as some sort of "gomasio" , as a condiment to rice dishes. It's a good source for Zinc in your diet.
It tastes pretty good too ;o)

I will be doing this in the fall here only any seed that don't have the traits I want are going to make a nice snack to munch on.
I wonder if there is a way to breed a pumpkin that gives a lot of seed or if there is a species out there can I get a name? -
Nice one mate ;-)

I am not a big fan of the pumpkin flesh but I do love roasted and salted pumpkin seeds so I prefer the pumpkins that are a little more hollow and have a lot more seeds.
