How to Save Basil Seeds
Tips, Tricks
Saving basil seeds for your next harvest is a very easy process.. It is an easy task & the seeds also make great gifts for friends, family & strangers alike.. The main problem we have is the over active bees that like to cross pollinate the 4 different varieties giving us a varied mix of basil to choose from when it come to preparing meals.. The varieties we have are Sweet basil - Ocimum basilicum Opal basil - Ocimum basilicum 'Purpurascens' Thai basil - Ocimum basilicum 'horapha' Perennial/sacred/holy basil - ocimum basilicum americanum Subscribing to us at Bits Out the Back is as easy as clicking below http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=bnbob01 You can also find Bits Out the Back on Facebook, Instagram & G+ where we post mini updates on the aquaponics/aquaculture, chooks, worms, wicking bed gardens & other small tidbits.. www.facebook.com/Bitsouttheback & on Instagram at bits_out_the_back Have a great one everyone...

I have so many dried flowers, is it possible to re-plant the seed without separating the flower husk or is that absolutely necessary to remove the husk of the flower before trying to use the seed to start seedlings?

Thank you so much for this information Rob. I am just starting out with my gardening with some occasional success but also some failures (what I cal 'test me moments'). I have had a problem this year with my tomatoes with what the experts call 'curly leaf'. Can you elaborate on this a little for me and is there a solution? The plants are still producing quite ok fruit but they look rather dreadful.

How about the Basil without a flower?

My holy basil didn't seem to be growing over the summer (2nd year), so I assumed it wouldn't produce. Then last week, I walked by and noticed a fully harvest that should have been cut a long time ago. It's early October, so I cut it back tonight and am about to hang the leaves for tea. However, much of the flowers are brown and dry. Does anyone know if they're still good for tea, or should I snip all of those brown flowers off? Half of the plants are brown/dry flowers on the top.

Thanks so much for posting this. I can now harvest my basil seeds and enjoy a nice crop next year :)

Grow a hybrid Basil plant to see what happens. You may come up with a new plant that tastes great. A signature plant all your own.

I'm newly retired and want to grow herbs and vegetables. I really enjoyed your information on basil seeds. I have sweet basil with flowers starting and wish to plant them. How long Sir do you suggest I let them dry before planting ?I live in Arizona and all my plants so far are on the patio with sunlight in the morning while it's cool and then shade in the hot part of the day. Thank you for a response. ARTHUR

Hey man! Couple of questions. When you sow your seeds, do you overseed the tray? Are your big plants from one seedling or do you plant a bunch of them all together? Lastly, what is your soil like? Should I use the same soil as I do in my vegetable garden, or does it do better in a more sandy, lighter soil?
Thanks a bunch! -
once the plant is growing flowers is not edible anymore?

Hi there.
Bees & other pollinators help but aren't needed with basil.
Basil have what's called perfect flowers & are self pollinating. All you need to do is tap or jiggle the flower heads & that should help the seeds set.
Hope that helps some.

How moist would you keep the soil upon sowing the seeds, and until they sprout? My soil is well drained and the weather is now getting hot. I've planted seeds couple weeks ago and seen nothing but I fear I have over-watered.
