Greg, thanks for a helpful video! I was shown a great idea by an older friend: use a reciprocating saw on those roots. Still, I guess there's no getting around the digging! God bless!

Thanks! I was going to buy stump killer which would have taken weeks and would have required me to continue researching how to cut the stump lower (where it's the widest), but I don't need to do all that with this method!

Digging a stump out is hard work. I also use pruners and loppers to cut roots. That long steel bar is a digging bar. A tree limb saw is helpful. I have used a Hori Hori trowel for smaller stumps. A really big stump with a huge root system is a problem. Sometimes I think just pour gasoline on it and burn it. Maybe make a campfire around it. Probably a bad idea depending on where the stump is located. I usually dig them out and cut the roots like you. I do not use a chain saw, but trying my digging bar to pry on the stump is a good idea. I would hate to damage my shovel. I was watching a video where this lady drilled holes in the stump and packed the holes with epsom salt, and poured some around it too and covered it with a tarp to speed up decomposition. I have not tried this. Another video I watched had this guy use a tree stump jack. Never heard of this. Maybe drill holes down the trunk and fill them with gasoline and toss a match on it? lol. Oh, and instead of a chainsaw, I have gone through roots with an axe.

Might not have been easy but certainly was satisfying. Cheers

Bro you need a reciprocating saw. Chain saw will get ruined in dirt and a hand saw will take forever. Sawsall FTW. I do this stuff all day. And the blades are cheap, stick them right in the dirt and just replace them when they're ruined.

That's what i did. Was worried about the roots putting out another shoot though ?
Probably not at a guess now after seeing this with no mention of it -
Pull it with a truck!

Forget water, drink a beer!

this man is a monster, that is a living life you just killed, that poor tree did nothing to you...

I find an axe easier than a saw. For the real big ones set a fire in the hole and burn them out.

Just what I was looking for. Going to be tackling this tomorrow in my front garden. Thanks!

I would almost never cut down a lemon tree; perhaps only under the most extreme and exceptional conditions. The stump I have (a massive shrubbery with a two-foot diameter merged clump that formed a stump) is immediately above a 50-year old natural gas pipeline and totally encapsulates it with roots. It is quite a confounding challenge.

Good one mate!

Greg, I find an Engine Crane and a lump of chain works best! Saves on breaking your back too!! :)
