Can they be trimmed back in early March? I am basically in the same weather as Mississauga here in New York. If I can trim it now, can I try to root a cutting or two to try and grow another one?

You're welcome! Yes, the pruning did a good job on regenerating the shrubs. The main thing is to prune in early spring.
