How to Prune a Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae)

From http://thehorticult.com/: Probably the most fun plant to prune, the bird of paradise requires some muscle to cleanly remove faded stalks. Here, The Horticult demonstrates how to extract a particularly stubborn dead bird. Warning: make sure your plant is well established before wrestling with it. For less established Strelitzia reginae, just clip stalks at the base.

I usually just cut it short and yank it out when it grows toward the outside with the older leaves.
