How to Prepare Eggshells for Use in the Garden: Vinegar & Blossom End Rot - The Rusted Garden 2014
Tips, Tricks
Eggshells are made of calcium carbonate. Tomatoes and vegetables use calcium. Eggshells need to breakdown into a usable form for garden vegetables and tomatoes. I discuss this process and how to use vinegar to chemically breakdown the eggshell and make calcium. Blossom end rot is associated with calcium issues in tomato plants. New to Gardening? Im of the opinion that slower is better. I pulverize my eggshells and spread it on the ground where I'll be planting. The eggshells get processed naturally.

Love the chemistry!

Gary, have ever heard of using ammonium sulfate on onions?
-
For all you organic people that love to practice a more healthy way of doing it. I prefer to boil the egg shells on the stove instead of using microwave! Keep the temperature at 100 degree or when water gets to a boiling point. Microwave use is for those who dont mind rushing the process.

I will try this ... thanks. Well detailed.

do we have to age it also before use?
-
thank you

Hi Gary, can you boil the egg shells to sterilize them?
-
I did the vinegar + crushed egg shell experiment and forgot about and the left over liquid evaporated leaving white powdery crystals in the bowl. Im assuming this is calcium ? its it still usable in this form ??
-
As I found, the reaction of eggshell + vinegar results in "Calcium Acetate" and not Cal alone.
Would calcium acetate be okay for plants? -
What a great idea for adding calcium to the garden and also a great way to do some recycling. I won't be throwing out my egg shells anymore that is for sure. Thanks for the great information.

I just want to say as a first-time Gardener thank you Gary for all of your great videos. straight to the point, informational, no fluff

Do you have to sterilize the eggs before putting them in the garden? Or just dry them out by putting them in the oven?
-
thanks for the info. I have a bag of egg shells in the fridge. so place the shells on baking sheet in oven at 180°for how long. .. I will be doing this. is it also good for all plants?
