How to Plant Winter Grass
Tips, Tricks
http://www.growsomethinggreen.com/ A simple way to plant winter/rye grass in your yard. Here are some steps to follow when planting your winter lawn. 1.) Set your lawn mower to the lowest setting and mow once or twice 2.) Rake up any extra grass on the lawn 3.) Spread the rye grass seed on the lawn really thick (optional) You can cover the seed with seed cover or compost to help speed up the germination and protect the seed from the birds, but the birds will get their fair share regardless. 4.) Water 3 to 4 times a day for around 6 to 8 minutes each Grass should start popping up within a week or two and you will have one nice looking lawn. Video was recorded in Arizona so results may vary. Best of luck. growing...winter grass

I hate grass. It grows like a weed and you have to waste time and energy mowing it. I've been trying to eradicate grass from my yard for years and years so that I don't have to mow anymore.
Apparently, many grasses use a newer type of photosynthesis called C4 that outperforms plants using the older C3 type photosynthesis. C4 plants are more efficient with water, more heat tolerant, and grow faster under low CO2 concentrations than C3 plants. No wonder grass is such a nuisance in my garden.
Corn and sugar cane are C4 plants that produce food. There are a couple spots in my yard where the grass never dies despite all my efforts. I'm gonna try growing corn over there to shade it out this coming spring. At least corn has the good sense to die off after a certain time, unlike grass. -
I'm trying to incorporate ryegrass to help the poor drainage of my lawn. With annual ryegrass are you constantly reseeding yearly? I live in southern cali, so i got to look into the annual or the perennial version thx !

@KooFootballMan If you simply use a roller that is filled with water, & roll your seed to press them into the soil, then cover seed with just enough peat moss that watering doesn't expose the seed again - usually about 1/4 inch deep of peat moss - the birds won't see the seed. There's a peat moss spreader that looks like a roller, except its made of expanded steel (the same steel that is often used as barbecue grates) & can be rented at equipment rental yards for a few bucks a day; works great!

When grass seed companies sell bags of seed they always list the number of square feet that the bag of seed is supposed to cover. Those coverage stats are done with optimal soils, sunlight, proper watering, and care, by professionals at the laboratory . That is just an advertising techniques to try and outsell the competition in the grass seed market. I always use about 2 or 3 times as much seed as the manufacturer says to use. You get a great stand of grass, and a lush looking lawn.

@KooFootballMan put some peat moss over the seeds, it also helps retaining moisture.....

@KooFootballMan I heard if you put some wooden steaks around the perimeter of your lawn that you just seeded and tie some red on the stakes, the tape is suppose to make some movement with the wind and scare the birds. Also I heard you can hang or put some aluminum pie tins or aluminum foil up.
