How to Plant Sweet Potatoes
Tips, Tricks
This is a video on growing sweet potato plants in your own garden. Steps: 1. Spread bone meal in bed. You want to cover the box with enough bone meal that it makes a nice dusting. 2. Use garden rake or tiller to mix it in the soil. 3. Smooth the soil nicely. 4. Plant your sweet potatoes about a foot apart. Dig the holes about 4 inches deep. (Don't plant too early. Sweet potato plants do not like cold weather.) 5. Sprinkle fertilizer around them. Use 10x10x10. (10% nitrogen/ 10% phosphorus/ 10% pot ash.) 6. Water your plants and keep an eye on them throughout the growing season. Good luck!

I don't have any plants like you bc I live way up here in southern Iowa . Yup so do you think I can plant a sweet potato like we do regular ones ? You know the ones that are have a plant growing out of the potato .

Why did you plant them so far from the edges?

Cool video

Thank you, that was a great video. My wife is planting sweet potatoes and this was very helpful!!!

Ok, thanks. I'm UK so Va would be Virginia I take it. Do you have a similar climate to UK. I've just planted some Bonita slips in a raised bed in a polytunnel but fear it may be too warm.

Thanks for sharing very informative

It may have already been asked, but where are you located, please?

Be prepared to buy another carburetor for that Honda 110 tiller. They are garbage and don't last long!!!
-
Do you mulch your sweet potatoes later on?

Good job, Harold and Chloe! This told me just what I wanted to know.

Awesome video! Thank you for that!!!

Nice down-home feel to the video because it isn't overly produced and they had some regular conversation while they demonstrated (I hope Chloe had fun at her dance!). The video showed how to plant sweet potatoes with simplicity, which is great for those of us who aren't able to put tons of work into every detail, but still want to grow veggies in the garden. Thanks.

Seems to me the application of fertilizer benefited some of the weeds not unless a regular visits to weedout is the solution.Watching the Elderly folks back home in the 70s fertilizer spread out first in the furrows then cover it with little dirt before planting the potato vine. The measurement of the vine ranges from 10 to14 Inches coz longer segments buried more roots to come out that will turn into crops. My backyard garden can't apply what I observed in the Philippines because of the quality of soil which is sticky and hard. The only benefits I got is the steamed leaves for salad.

are you able to transplant sweet potato like can I grow it in a pot then plant it in the garden when the weather is safer and more protected from slugs?
-
Great video except for the tilling part. That actually kills the good microbes and brings weed seeds to the surface. You are better off to turn it by hand. It's not that hard to do.
