The time to plant is Spring and Fall when the growing season is cool. First, water real well before planting until you see the peat pot turn dark brown. Then take the label off the pot. You can put this in your recycling bin. Peel off the rim of the pot so that it can't stick up out of the ground. If it does, the roots can dry out. Crumble the pieces on the ground or compost them. Also, peel off the bottom half of the peat pot to uncover some roots that can touch the soil immediately. If the whole pot falls away, that's okay. Set transplants container deep, that is, the same depth they are already growing in their pot. If planted too deeply, though, they can rot. Fill the hole and gently pat the soil back into place to tamp out any air pockets. Plant salad greens in soil enriched with compost, rotted leaves or other good organic matter so that leaves can grow fast and tender. Water it well to give the plant a good start and settle the soil. Mix Bonnie's Herb and Vegetable Plant Food in the water to give your plants a boost.
