I bought light row covers & it helped a lot. Never open the cover especially after the rain that's the time they come & attack. What is helping me a lot is I mix cayenne pepper, garlic, biodegradable soap & water. Spray the whole area & I don't measure how much I put in. The more cayenne & garlic the better it taste lol. They stop coming back to my yard.

If I want to plant kale at the end of summer, will it grow during the fall season? I'm new to planting leafy greens, this will be my first year and i'm doing them in large containers. If it's fall time, would I have to plant them indoors or could I leave them in the containers outside? :-)

I have Kale in a planter and I found a green caterpillar and I think there's also spider mites. Any idea on what I can spray on the Kale that is a good home remedy. I don't mind sharing but not with insects. Any suggestion is appreciated.

I am in zone 8 B and I grow cool weather crops twice a year..jan-may and /or september to jan. Shade cloth ( or similar) is my saving grace for a lot of my crops and filtered light if its a cool crop so tree canopies help. try mulching with long pine needles , soft bodied bugs don't like them, or oyster shells, demetrious earth because it literally rips them in half and kills them

Great video! Just curious I am new to planting kale and I am using the jiffy pods as well, typically how long does it take to germinate in the pods? My tomatoes all ready sprouted but nothing from the kale I was thinking about restarting them. Thanks in advanced Clayton

Insects!!! A love and hate relationship.
Last year I planted collards---they grew and grew, great big beautiful leaves (you could even smell them when you get close) and the INSECTS had an absolute feast! By the time we decided to try and harvest, the insects had won the battle and the war!
So, this year I am going to try garden netting.
Love your videos -
Any advice for keeping earwigs out of cabbage?

Did the sand work? Kale is my favorite, can't wait to get seeds going soon.

Did you have to reapply the sand, if so how often?

GYNURA PROCUMBENS, LONGEVITY SPINACH (aka ASHITABA) is a great plant to plant and it is very medicinal along with tasting like spinach and doesnt mind the heat

I love that you put the caterpillar aside instead of squishing him in the video. Being newer to gardening, I've realized it is not for the faint of heart. Practicing organic gardening often reduces me to hand controlling natures pesky produce consumers. In N. Florida, this Sept. I should have enough time for more cucumbers, and bush peas. Also starting seeds for broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. After that is done, I will put in garlic, onions, carrots, beets, kale, spinach, swiss chard, red leaf lettuce, turnips, and brussel sprouts (if it's the right season for them). After many failed attempts, I will attempt again to grow ginger. Aside from growing a few beans and tomatoes in pots, this is only my second year growing a full garden. Most of my learning has come from failed attempts, experimenting, you-tube videos, and our local seed lending library. I'm amazed at the labor hours and devotion necessary for even a modest harvest. My goals are to use open-pollinated seeds, organic fertilization, and cost-effective, efficient practices. We have chickens, rabbits, a cow, and vermiculture system which we rely on for fertilizer production. But the circle is complete, when we can throw veggie scraps, or unused parts (carrot tops, broccoli greens, etc) back to our animals for feed.

Is this a particular kind of sand or is it like the stuff from the playground?

I was looking for some information on Kale and came across your videos. They are very informative. I sure will try the sham-poo as I use only natural soaps made in Barbados from Moringa etc. Your videos are very well presented and you communicate very clearly. hallamhope@gmail.com

I really like your Videos!I like plant my own vegetables and it has a lot of fun .Nowdays ,there is so much pesticides residues in the vegetables which I bought from the store.I really worried my family's health. I plant pakchoi ,tomatoes, peppers, leeks and other vegetables. I use organic soil and fertilizer and they grow really well.l grow them on the balcony although it's a limited space but I harvest a lot of .I even raised my earthworms and using vermicompost fertilized the soil. By the way, I live in China .my hometown is Huangshan city where it is famous for mountain Huangshan. Welcome to my hometown!
