Colocasia are the "original" elephant ears with downward facing leaves resembling the shape of an elephant ear. Colocasia elephant ears will go dormant in the winter. Alocasia's on the other hand, also know as "Upright" Elephant Ears, produce shiny leaves pointing straight upward. Alocasia will stay green throughout the winter if brought inside and planted in a container making for great winter houseplants! Both the Alocasia and Colocasia are unique, thriving in both sun or shade. If planting in a sunny area, for best results try and plant in an area that will receive some break from the hot summer sun! HOW TO PLANT ELEPHANT EAR BULBS The first step in planting elephant ear bulbs is digging a hole deep enough for the entire bulb to be planted about 1 inch beneath the soil line. When digging your hole, be sure to loosen the soil at the bottom allowing the roots to reach the water more easily. Be sure to water your elephant ears regularly, as they do require a fair amount of water. Before you place the elephant ear bulb in the hole, sprinkle in a some slow release fertilizer so it has a good supply of food when it's growing. Plant your elephant ear bulb with the old stem facing upwards about an inch under the soil line and cover with soil. This is how to plant elephant ear bulbs.
