How to Plant Decorative Dinnerplate Dahlias: Jeff Turner on how to plant Dahlia tubers
Tips, Tricks
http://www.jparkers.co.uk/c-mi/dahlias/large-dinner-plate-dahlias/ Here Jeff shows us how to grow large Dahlia flowers, the largest in fact. If you want a truly remarkable show this summer, these Dinnerplate Dahlias are the perfect choice. As mentioned by Jeff, these spectacular flowers were for a long time out of favour amongst the British for summer garden displays. But these days they are back in fashion and have the popularity they deserve -- Jeff is very on trend in this video. Easy to grow and extremely worthwhile, these Dahlias get their name from the sheer size of their bloom. Masses of huge, spectacular flowers are produced throughout the summer months, the largest of all Dahlia varieties, making a superb border show as well as excellent long lasting cut flower display. They will bloom in July and continue to flower until the first frost, around October time. The UK's leading mail order plant and bulb supplier J. Thanks Jeff. I am a bit mystified by your saying dahlias became unpopular just after WW2. My old Dad was a dahlia man, and he grew them when he was able to turn his garden over from vegetables (During hostilities) to more decorative plants. He loved his dahlias, and there was a huge display every year; that passers-by used to stop in the 'right 'o way' at the top of the garden, just to hang over the fence and ogle the plants. Dahlias on one side, Chrysanthemums on the other! I wish I had the patience to grow these, but I think I'd probably buy new tubers each year! Lol! May your dahlias 'dale', and your garden 'garde'. Cheers

Hi JP. I just subscribed to your channel. Great tutorial. It helped me out a great deal. Just bought my first dahlia. Know one else said to soak them. I'm in Oregon, US. Do you think mid March is too soon or late to plant them?? Thank you!

Hi, thanks for the comment! You don't have to use containers, we simply recommend lifting your tubers to store them frost-free. So lift each tuber from the ground, set it out in a cool dry place to allow it to dry out, then you can simply store it in a paper bag in a shed or garage to keep it cool but indoors and protected from winter frosts and replant next year. Hope this is helpful- enjoy your new hobby, hope you'll find it very rewarding!

hi there, could you please explain more what type of containers I could use to make sure they are "froze-free". I am brand new to planting/gardening, just started a month ago. Thank you so much. Love-Light-Smiles~Fabi

Hi, Thanks for the question! There is some reasoning behind that, yes - it encourages vigorous new growth. Soaking the tubers allows them to take in water necessary for their growth before they are planted. Hope this helps!

If I may ask. Is there a reason to plop the Dahlia in water for 24 hours? How does it help?.
