A metal spike is the only tool you need to plant daffodil, tulip and crocus bulbs. We plant a sackful every autumn and it’s a quick and fun job. Just make a hole, pop in the bulb and cover it with soil. That’s it. No need for anything else. Then you can forget about them till the following spring when they will reward your efforts big time. And every year they’re in the ground, the more flowers you’ll get. We plant a few different varieties – not just because they look different, but because they bloom at different times. We now are able to gather fresh bunches of daffodils every day for 6 weeks or so. And they only smell gorgeous! Plant your bulbs between September and November. At least 4” and preferably 6” deep. Put the hairy side down – that’s where the roots grow from. Good luck! (Our spike was once mounted on a tractor for lifting silage-bales. We found it by the side of the road.)
