The time to plant is in spring or early fall when the growing season will be cool. First, water real well before planting until you see the peat pot turn dark brown. These environmentally friendly peat pots spare tons of plastic and will add organic matter to your bed. Then, take the label off the pot. You can put this in your recycling bin. Peel off the rim of the pot so it can't stick up out of the ground. If it does, the roots can dry out. Crumble the pieces into the hole or compost them. Also, peel off the bottom half of the peat pot to uncover some roots that can touch the soil immediately. If the whole pot falls away, that's okay. If your plant is in a plastic pack, turn the pack upside down and gently slip the plants out. Don't grab plants by the stem and pull up because that can sever the stem from the roots. Recycle the plastic pack. Plant Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Collards, Cauliflower, Kale and Kohlrabi as least as deep as they come in their pot. If the plant is a bit floppy and lanky at the base, you can pinch off the lower leaves and then bury it slightly deeper to bury the lanky stem, only an inch or so deeper though, not too much. Fill the hole around the transplant and gently pat the ground to tamp out air pockets. Plant into soil enriched with compost, rotted leaves or other good organic matter - because cabbage and its relatives need moist fertile soil. Water it well to give the plant a good start and settle the soil. Mix Bonnie's Herb and Vegetable Plant Food in the water to give your plants a boost.
