Dirt ring around perimeter for watering is not recommended by landscape professionals, as it causes a pond effect essentially drowning the tree. It is best to keep soil around tree flush with root flare, then add light layer of mulch and keep well watered for first few weeks. Dirt water rings can be effective for young bare root trees granted you remove ring after first growing season.

Donut mulching can also cause production of girdling roots by suffocating root mass! Keep mulch layer at "Beneficial" two inches, not suffocating three or more.
