How to Overwinter Chili Pepper Plants an easy guide (HD)
Tips, Tricks
A simple guide on how to overwinter your chilli pepper plants. ChilliDave shows us how to choose your plant and how easy and simple it is to over winter. The advantage of overwintering is that growth will start early in the season and you will have chillies before your seedlings mature, as the plant has established itself. The chili plant he has decided to trim is a Naga Viper one of the Worlds Hottest Chili A few choice clips with secateurs (sharp) he trims off the stalks, just above old leaf drop and near the main stem. We advise using a slow release fertilizer to re-nourish the root ball, then in the new year we will re-pot into a larger pot approx 30cm diameter, however you can put in a larger pot as this will increase the size of the plant (this is depending on the type of chili). Hi, how often do you water your plants over the winter
-
Hi! This is my second year with my chillis and they have grown a lot and even got some flower but no chillis. One of the plants the Morouga scorpion pepper still have leafs at the top of its four branches, should I wait until it drops 'em and then cut them down?
Cheers! -
why would you cut it so low lol why not cut at the top so all of those little nodules can bush out

Do you water the plant over winter?
If so, how much/little? -
Hi. Very simple and informative post, thanks. What time of year do you do the pruning, or is it more rule of thumb, when most of the leaves have dropped off, or maybe at the end of Autumn? My kitchen window is south facing, should I avoid putiing the pruned plant where it gets full sun, or is that fine? I'm growing scotch bonnet and serrano chillies this year- they are doing well not but had a very slow start as they were in the wrong pots and wrong soil for a month or so in the spring. The chillies are forming quite late - so I'm looking forward to the overwintered plants having a head-start next year. Thanks

I will do so. :-)

When do you prune and transplant your plants? This winter I waited until now to prune them, but one plant dried completely out and is practically dead. They stand on my windowsill. Should I have pruned it in fall?

The tunnel is on the allotment and is about 30 foot long so not very easy to insulate the whole thing. We are in Doncaster, so we don't get heavy minus temperatures very often. I understand that the plants will die below 5 deg? It will get below that in the tunnel over winter.
I was intending to grow them in very big pots instead of the soil next year, so I was thinking of digging up, pruning back and potting them in smaller pots for the winter, then re potting to the big pots when it warms up a bit. Is that a good idea?
I have been looking for advice on a good compost to plant them in, do you have any advice as to a make or brand that I can get at the garden center that will be good for the chillies, and if I should mix in some food.
I have been using Chilli Focus liquid food to date. Last year was our first year with chillies, it was very good. in the coming year we want to see if we can grow enough to fill our needs for a year. Thanks, Paul. -
Thanks for that. They were grown in the soil. so would you recommend lifting and potting, then bring them in.

Just like Naxxrams I'm new to the chili plant growing hobby; however, I live in South Texas and the winters are pretty mild, but can kill plants with frost. Nevertheless, I don't have a green house and I plan to bring in my plants in for the winter (its just not cold enough yet here in Texas). When I do bring them inside, should I keep them under grow lights when winter temperatures start and cut them like you did when the leaves start falling and the plant is starting its hibernation?

Hi Clifton, Im a new starter with this.
I got tree plants of chillis as a birthday present (worlds hottest, secound and third). They are really starting to grow a lot around 12-16 centimeters so they got thin stems, less then a pen thickness. Do you still recommend me cutting them down as presented? They haven't dropped their leaves yet, should I wait for so, do I have to be afraid if the leaves are miss colored?
Thanks for answer! :D
