How to make inexpensive paper seed pots out of newspaper
Tips, Tricks
How to make cheap or free paper plant seed pots. My short video for a gardening friend on how to make inexpensive paper pots for flower and vegetable seed and seedlings from newspaper.I was prompted to post on YouTube with a view It might help a lot of other people. By using different sized formers you can make a large variety of paper seed pots. Once the seeds have germinated in the pots and growing they can then be planted on outside without any disturbance to the young roots of the seedlings with the paper maintaining moisture and degrading in the earth over time. You can also make very degradable seed pots from the cardboard centres of toilet rolls. In some ways ideal for pre planting seeds such as runner bean as the root from the seed tends to travel down the tube with space to spare. Once they are a good size it's simple a case of planting the whole tube, with seed into your prepared location. oh. duh, right? what was i expecting? thanks.

Yes. Maybe caused by slight overwatering, but as you say it seems to bring no harm to the young plants.

I've also noticed a bit of mold growth on the newspaper but the mold did not harm the plants at all. And the mold will dye off by the time I plant my seedling.

I have used toilet roll holders in the past, but. Im not sure where you are Simon, but around here the manufactures are now making the rolls a lot thinner and smaller. I guess its an economy drive for them. My way you can make pots to the size to suit your needs. Good luck with your plants.

Thanks for the quick reply! despite the lack of information I had at the time I went and made 15 and planted my physalis in 10 of them, I tied them together in bundles with some string just in case, I also found out you could use toilet rolls by cutting 4 small flaps into one size (slightly larger than radius of roll) and then fold then inward like a box (all overlapping), its a lot easier, faster and more sturdy! (but it takes a while to get the rolls!)

Hi Simon.. In answer to your question. Yes in time they do go soggy, but by the time that happens the seedling are usually well established. The idea is to support the seedling roots until ready to move on. I place them together in a seed tray supporting each other. I use four layer of newspaper and when the seedling are ready to go simple transfer the whole plant and newspaper pot to wherever, the newspaper will help maintain moisture and decay in time. Try a few first and compare to your usual

I am looking to plant some Phyisalis (The Lantern Fruit) and the germination period can last up to 2 weeks, would the newspaper not get soggy and rip/go mushy? How many sheet should I use to prevent this?

Should have replied ages ago Tony. Many thanks for you great comment and I hope you have success with your newspaper pots.

Thank you for the video. I'm taking up my own hobby farm this year and the potting supplies at the store would eat up any profits I could make at me road side stand or farmers markets. I was looking for the Potmaker, your version is the same!
-
Very nicely made. I never have enough toilet roll inners so will be making these.
