I am going to be starting my seeds this year for the first time and I have to know... why do you include bagged potting mix in your mix? I was thinking about using coir, vermiculite, and castings... what am I missing?
-
This is still my fav method, but I use news paper instead (I hate news) ;-)
So is this still your fav potting mix?? If not what do U use nowadays?? -
one question: when bottom watering, how much water to put in?? should I be able to see any of the water after, say, an hour? thank you!

can someone explain how 2 people added thumbs down???????????????? what did they expect???? o, wait, it must have been a peat pot salesman : )GREAT VID, GOD BLESS!
-
Patrick, do you have a good source for affordable coconut coir? I'm having trouble finding it locally. Thanks!
-
Brilliant, Patrick. I do this for my "starter" pots. I also use use used toilet paper tubes which are essentially the same. They are brilliant for starting Basil because Basil doesn`t like to be transplanted or potted on so as you do with your carrots I just start my Basil in them and put them, pot and all, straight into the garden when big enough. ~ Mark

Thanks for making a great video. I've subscribed to your channel. Thanks for sharing.

Very frugal making use of old paper for growing food in, well done Patrick! I have a newspaper pot making kit which is good fun on cold rainy days:)

I use paper pots for most of my indoor starts. I never thought of starting carrots in them. What a great idea! It's always such a pain trying to plant and space those tiny little seeds directly in the ground. I'd much rather do it this way. Thanks so much for the idea! I will be doing that next spring for sure!

Awesome way to repurpose those papers! Thanks for sharing Patrick!

Nice one Patrick... We don't get paper bags here much any more.. We have used newspaper & toilet rolls & they both work fine.. Looking forward to see how your fall garden goes..
Cheers mate.. -
Thank you sir!

You could also use the cardboard tubes from paper towel and toilet paper rolls.
Anything thicker may lock up too much water, but with that in mind it could still work you just need to add a little more nitrogen to the soil inside. -
Like the idea of using the cans mate. I will be using that for starts from now on.
Nice one -
That's a great tip. I'm sure that a lot of your success with this method is due to the great worm compost you make.
-
Nice "how to" for recycling , Patrick.

I can't believe that two people chose not to like this tip. I think its a wonderful tip on re-purposing already abundant resources. We will give this a try here at Pine Meadows Hobby Farm.

Hi Partrick!
I am glad to see I am not the only one thats still making paper pots and starting seeds for their fall/winter garden.
I make my paper pots in almost the same way. I did start making square paper pots a few weeks ago. I also use toilet paper and paper towel rolls but I run out of those rolls really fast.
I am glad you mentioning to open up the bottom just a bit when planting them outside. I've heard may trolls complain about pater pots made from news paper. What do you think about that? Do you think it's safe to use newspaper?
Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! Your instructions are always very clear. I never thought about starting carrots indoors--I will definitely give that a try. At the beginning of August I replanted a bed with root vegetables and leafy greens and except for spinach all was going well, but a couple of days ago I went out and everything but the radishes were almost completely gone. I'm not sure I will be able to get another crop now. I'm wishing I had started indoors in pots.

I do this with toilet paper tubes.
